Man Shot in South Seattle, Brawl and Gunfire in Westlake

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Police say two men were arrested after a brawl in Westlake and another a man was treated for a gunshot wound to the buttocks after he was shot outside of a party in South Seattle in a separate incident last night.

According to police, at 10:20 p.m. last night, a group of men got into an argument at a dock in the 1800 block of Westlake Ave N after one man approached two other men and asked them to quiet down. Police say the noisy men became aggressive before the other man brandished a holstered handgun and was then attacked.

The two men knocked the other man to the ground, and kicked him in the face and head. During the scuffle, the gun discharged but didn't hit anything. Police say the gun owner sustained "extensive injuries" and was transported to Harborview. Police booked his two assailants into the King County Jail for investigation of assault.

Later that night, Police were later called to a Swedish Hospital just before 1:00 AM after a man was brought in with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.

The man told police he was at a house party near 46 Ave S and S Othello when he went outside to watch fireworks. While he was standing in the front yard of the house he was struck in the backside by a single bullet. The man went inside the house and found someone to drive him to the hospital. Police say his injuries are not life-threatening and believe the shooting was random and that the man was not targeted in the incident.

It also appears a man was shot in the 4500 block of Beach Drive SW at about 1:00 this morning, but police haven't yet provided any details.

Catching A Wave

This is probably a Slog Post for one person out there, but I don't want you—whoever you are—to miss the opportunity.

Great local poetry publisher Wave Books is hosting three days of poetry, from August 14th through the 16th. The event includes films, readings by many poets, exhibitions, a book arts presentation, and discounts on poetry books at 14 local bookstores.

Tickets for the whole three-day event are $75 each ($50 for students). If the economy's got you down, Wave Books is providing a free scholarship to 10 people who can't pay the ticket price but would like to attend all three days. If that sounds like you, you should send a query e-mail with a little bit of information about yourself to this e-mail address at Wave Books as soon as possible. It sounds like a poetry-lovers dream come true.

If you've read this far and you're not into poetry, bless you. Here is a photo of a sexy lady and here is a photo of her sexy husband for your trouble.

From Studio360's Gay Flag Design Challenge comes the Flag of Equal Marriage, "an evolving protest flag for equal marriage rights in the United States," whose stars "represent the states that actively perform same-sex marriages."

'Target Practice: Painting Under Attack, 1949–78'

If you despise a thing, shoot it. If it doesn't die, you will never be set free. That's what we all learned about painting, anyway. But what invigorating exercise all those tortures and attempted homicides were. Seattle Art Museum curator Michael Darling has put together a major loan exhibition—and published a full hardback catalog—bringing together classic works (Rauschenberg's erased de Kooning drawing, a Warhol piss painting, Lucio Fontana's sliced canvases) with lesser-knowns to create a monumental portrait of 20th-century existential distress. (Seattle Art Museum, 1300 First Ave, 344-5275. 10 am–5 pm, $15 suggested.)

Reading Today

Posted by Paul Constant on Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 10:22 AM

d643/1246550472-the_artist_within.jpgThere is one reading today.

Ferre Whitney reads from The Artist Within: A Guide to Becoming Creatively Fit at the University Village Barnes & Noble. Whitney would like to provide a workout for your art muscle.

Instead, you should visit the used bookstore nearest to you, buy the book with the catchiest title you can find (regardless of content), and read it this afternoon. This has worked well for me in the past, leading to the discovery of books like The Man Who Killed Mick Jagger, Only in America, and Lawrence Welk's oddly readable biography Wunnerful, Wunnerful!

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.
