Oh, Right: We're At War

Posted by on Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 4:08 PM

WaPo:

Thousands of U.S. Marines descended upon the volatile Helmand River valley in helicopters and armored convoys early Thursday morning, mounting an operation that represents the first large-scale test of the U.S. military's new counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan. The operation will involve about 4,000 troops from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, which was dispatched to Afghanistan earlier this year by President Obama to combat a growing Taliban insurgency in Helmand and other southern provinces.

I for one am glad to welcome America back to Afghanistan so my fellow Canadian soldiers can come home at last.

Happy Canada Day!

Afghanistan?

Didn't we lose that war like 7 years ago?

This is the kind of thing that should be front page stuff every day. It makes me desperately sad that our soldiers are putting their lives on the line, and Normandy/D-Day type invasions are going on here, and few people notice it because it's buried on page A-27, or tucked in a random corner on a web page, because the headlines are crowded with Michael Jackson, Jon and Kate, and budget talks. Priorities of the media + apathy of the general public = FAIL.

Melissa C @ 6,

Well what's the point, really? I marched against the wars, I wrote my Congressjerks, I e-mailed, I donated money, etc., for like five years, and how's that worked out?

The politicians, the media and the public couldn't give a fuck, the war profiteers have ordered that the wars continue since they're getting insanely rich, and the troops think that they're somehow "keeping us safe" and "promoting democracy" by shooting, torturing and bombing people.

It's mind-asploding, idiotic, psychopathic bullshit, and there's not a damn thing we can do about any of it.

@6 it just happened you dumb shit (24 hour news cycle and all that). Will you still complain about our apathy when it is splashed across the front page of the Seattle Times?
And did you really just compare this to D-Day? 150,000 allied soldiers attacking Nazi occupied Europe is comparable to 4,000 American troops about to beat the shit of out of a couple thousand cave dwelling Taliban? You, my friend, lack historical context.

Do you think the British government is the only one naive about thiswar ?

"The officer, who works in defence intelligence, has described the British presence in Helmand as an "unmitigated disaster" fuelled by "lamentable" government spin and naïvety.

Writing in the British Army Review, an official MoD publication, Major SN Miller, stated: "Lets not kid ourselves. To date Operation Herrick [the British codename for the War in Afghanistan] has been a failure". "
