Done. Thanks for prompting me. It has been niggling at me since I first read about coverage of this incident.

Done. Like LM, I'd put it off.

The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram had this bit about the police chief, speaking at a previously scheduled public forum at which gay activists questioned him:

Once patrons confronted the officers, Halstead said, the bar check took on a very different tone.

Halstead asked again for people who were at the Rainbow Lounge to come forward and tell police what they saw.

He said that the department had received about 500 calls but that only two were from people who had been at the bar. Investigators need to hear from witnesses, not just from people who want to complain, he said.

Halstead promised that he will work to employ a liaison between police and the gay community.

"We’ve got to work together," Halstead said. "Be patient, and you will see that this is just not lip service. I will meet with you wherever you want to meet. I will go to your restaurants, your house, we can eat barbecue, whatever you want to do. But we’ve got to talk.

"We will heal beyond this."

Just thought I'd share what I sent in the content of my email....

Be on the right side of history; civil rights for all people.

Two consenting adults should be able to connect with each other how they see fit (given obvious limitations of maiming, murder, and such.)

You don't have to understand the idea of people being attracted to folks of the same sex; gays and lesbians exist. Throughout history, and throughout the animal kingdom, mammals attracted to partners of the same sex make up a small percentage of many, many populations.

Allowing gays/lesbians to live openly is the only way to foster healthy relationships in the gay or lesbian communities.

Healthier relationships mean healthier people.

Unhealthy, closeted, secret relations are tragic.

Please, lets all at least be civil.

Thank you.

Thanks.

Now where have I heard that name before ... was he that kid that couldn't read well during 5th grade in school? Seriously, the name is really familiar ... maybe we used to play with the fire ant hills ...

What's with all of the non-local content lately?
Why should an elected official give a fuck about how somebody from a different state feels?
When can your "technical team" rename the SLOG to the GLOG?

I'm from the DFW area originally and glad to hear about this. In any case, even if something horrible like this were happening elsewhere, I'd want to hear about it. Maybe the local officials aren't counting on votes of non-constituents, but if they get a lot of negative attention from across the country, especially in more mainstream media - they'll pay attention (as will their constituents).

I just sent a letter to all the council members and the mayor listed. I'm not from Fort Worth, so I just identified as a DFW resident, which is true :P
