Sen. Al Franken (D-MN)

Posted by on Tue, Jun 30, 2009 at 11:31 AM

It's unanimous:

The Minnesota Supreme Court has handed down its much-expected ruling in the heavily-litigated Minnesota Senate race from 2008—and it's a unanimous one—deciding against Republican former Sen. Norm Coleman's appeal of his defeat in the election trial and affirming the lower court's verdict that Democratic comedian Al Franken is the legitimate winner of the race.

The courts finds that "Al Franken received the highest number of votes legally cast and is entitled under Minn. Stat. § 204C.40 (2008) to receive the certificate of election as United States Senator from the State of Minnesota." This means that when Franken is ultimately seated, the Democrats will have 60 seats and be able to beat any Republican filibuster if they stay completely united (though good luck with that, obviously.)

But it ain't over. More details at TPM.

Last chance: Dollar a Day to Make Norm Go Away

Is this truly our last chance to kick Norm Coleman around?

Even if so (and I'm not banking on Pawlenty) you still have the option to donate a Dollar a Day to Make Norm Coleman Go Away.

Donations (so far, over $183,000!) go to the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which helps progressive candidates run effective campaigns and win.

Coleman will definitely contest this. Because he is a wiener. Which will make Minnesotans like him even less. Because if there's something Minnesotans can't stand, it's making a fuss.

I guarantee that if they filibuster his certification, that's the end of GOP progress in the senate for the forseeable future, especially since at this point it doesn't look like numbers in the Senate will do anything but stall out.

I can see the dissenters voting for and against things they normally wouldn't, just to screw over the GOP.

Norm Coleman, professional politician, has now officially lost political races to both a professional wrestler and a professional comedian.

Maybe he should try a different career.

Maybe, just maybe this will be resolved by the next election.

And that's a pretty big Maybe.

If the repubs were smart, they'd just let Franken in. Right now people are STILL unhappy with congress, so it would be amazing ammunition for them to have come election time to say "ha, see what you get with the dems controlling everything…." not that they aren't going to say that anyways, but at least the Minn. repubs can use it the most effectively, rather than giving the dems the opportunity to say "look at them waste money to keep elected officials from serving you".

But whatever. I am glad that we got the 60 seats. I just wish Dems had a spine and could really, actually use that power for good.

why not keep fighting it in the courts? the GOP has nothing to lose at this point. public opinion of the GOP can't go lower, they can afford the legal fees, the higher they go in the federal courts the friendlier it gets to them, and it puts the Obama at a (slight) disadvantage on the Senate floor as long as it drags out.

We here in Minnesota are just certain Gov. Pawlenty (R) will graciously sign the election certificate and Coleman won't file an appeal with the Federal Courts. Yeah. That's the plan.

I was in Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago. Weird people up there. They're all so pleasant it's like something out of The Stepford Wives, or that sci-fi flick about the pod people.

Meh. What does it matter that they have sixty seats in the Senate if no bloody bills get put to them?

Old man Fnarf probably doesn't even know that Massive Attack is a band name reference.

So it's up to the Democrats to protect the interests of corporate America now. I think they're up to the task.

@9 for the insightful win.

Fnarf will probably wiki it now and tell us stuff that those of us who followed the band on KCMU and went to their club events in the early days knew decades ago - but he'll insist his version is right.

I do know who Massive Attack are, or were. I have one of their records somewhere. It's hardly a recent reference; what is that, twenty years ago? Portishead was more my style from Bristol, though of course the almighty Sarah Records were from there, at about the same time too.

The notion of Will in Seattle attending a "club date" of any band at all, let alone trip-hop, is both laughable and frightening. Did MA even play in Seattle back in the 90s? I doubt it. Was WiS there? Not a fucking chance. Yet another Willfail.

@23 - I've probably been to more trip hop events than you have.

And, unlike you, I know of these things called cars and jets which take you places.

oh, by the way, Fnarf, remember how you said there were zero electric cars ...

suck on this.

Moron.

I never said there were zero electric cars, Will. I said there were zero electric cars with mass manufacture and distribution. Your link proves me right; every single car on that list is either a concept car, a prototype in testing, backordered out the wazoo, or a limited edition. You were wrong then, and you're wrong now. You are always wrong.

There are probably fewer than a half-dozen electric cars for sale in the greater Seattle area right now. And guess what: I know where they are, and you don't. I was just looking at some on Saturday.

Honestly, it's like you have a fetish or something. Not only are you full of shit, but you walk around with armloads of evidence that proves you're full of shit, and barge into unrelated conversations ALL THE FREAKING TIME to bug people to look at the evidence that you're full of shit.

Trip hop. I swear to almighty god. Trip hop. Sweet cakes of Jesus, Will. What the fuck is wrong with you? It's not NORMAL.
