The Satan of Cinema Strikes a Deal With the Satan of Publishing

Posted by on Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 1:50 PM

Now that the new Transformers movie has made over 200 million dollars in Americaand nearly 400 million dollars worldwide in its first week, it's time for Michael Bay to move along to a new project. And his new project is reportedly I Am Number Four, a film adaptation of the first book in an unpublished young adult series co-authored by James Frey.

The "Four" story line involves nine alien teens assimilating to high school on Earth after their planet is destroyed by an enemy species. The fourth of the group discovers that the enemy is now after him on Earth.

Ahem.

How can it be a "series" if it's "unpublished"?

If anyone needs me, I'll be writing a big-budget sequel to my highly successful unproduced movie screenplay.

@4: Not that uncommon for publishers to option/plan on a series and lock the writer into a contract for a set number of books.

Probably all or most of the books in the "first" series will be published or outlined before the first one hits the shelves.

Not that unusual at all.

I went to school with Jason Behr, same grade. I didn't know him too well though.

A series of books is frequently a really long thick book broken up into parts to sell well.

Dune is an exception, not the rule.

There is also the series (much like Dune) that was restarted after the first sold a shitton of copies: 2001, Rama, Ender's Shit, etc. Largely this is in sci-fi, though.
