"It felt so very Stonewall, but without the standing up for ourselves.”

afb2/1246241759-6a00d8341c730253ef0115718014a9970b-800wi.jpgPolice in Forth Worth, Texas, marked the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots—which were sparked when the NYPD raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn—by raiding a gay bar called the Rainbow Lounge. Fort Worth's finest are accused of using excessive force and making arbitrary arrests for public intoxication (a phenomenon that's never been observed in straight bars in Texas). The Instant Tea blog at the Dallas Voice is all over it but it's a confusing read. There's a good summary at Towleroad. There's a Facebook page with info, links, and eyewitness accounts.

Protests are underway in Fort Worth—so the standing up has begun. And let's look on the bright side: forty years ago the NYPD could've raided a bar called the Rainbow Lounge and we'd be marching today to mark the 40th anniversary of the Rainbow Riots.

Gay

Seattle Pride 2009

Like all good things, today's GLBT Pride celebration is two-pronged. Prong number one: The parade, which makes its way down Fourth Avenue from Union to Denny. (Expect noisy motorcycles, ambitious floats, and glittery everything.) Prong number two: The Seattle Center PrideFest, which features beer gardens, live music and dance performances, and roving hordes of gays and those who love them. (Pride Parade 11 am–2:30 pm, PrideFest 11 am–7 pm, both events free. For full info, see www.seattlepride.org.)

Reading Today

7b8c/1246037059-poetsguidetobirds.jpgOne reading today.

Judith Kitchen and Ted Kooser read at Open Books from The Poets Guide to the Birds, a poetry anthology that collects 151 poems about birds. I am weirdly excited by the idea of this book.

Otherwise, go have fun. Visit a bookstore and buy a couple books. There's a lot of summer reading to do.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.

If you weren't walking down Pine Street between 11:55 pm and 12:15 am last night...

...you missed an "impromptu" dance party on the parking lot where Cha Cha/Manray/Kincora used to be.

RIP, Billy Mays

Posted by Lindy West on Sun, Jun 28, 2009 at 9:20 AM

Infomercial king—much like that other American king—found dead at age 50.

Billy Mays, the TV pitchman whose trademark voice helped sell everything from cleaning supplies to baking soda, was found dead this morning by his wife at his Tampa home. No cause of death has been reported and no foul play is suspected, according to Tampa police.

"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days," Deborah Mays said in a statement today. "Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times."

Mays was a passenger Saturday of a 737 airplane that had a front tire blow out, said spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan. Mays and other passengers were interviewed by US Airways staff after the Philadelphia flight's hard landing. Responders reported no injuries.

You seemed like a good dude, Billy Mays.

I'm sure God had a plan. Perhaps the angels in heaven were under the impression that they needed a cabinet full of cleaners.
