false modesty doesn't look good on you Dan. I thought you were brilliant, but on his show, only Coal-bear gets to bring the funny.

So Dan, the DNC fundraiser raised quite a bit more this year than last. And only about 40 protesters showed up.

Handsome, as always. I always loved you on Colbert's show. This is no exception, even though it was a couple seconds. :P

YES.

It's only by constantly being pushy and callingout Obama that now the issue gets on TV with a huge, trusted "validator" like Colbert as good as saying fuck you Obama you're breaking your word.

So all the voices calling for bitching and moaning and action were right and all the voices saying wait shut up take it and suffer were and are wrong.

If there were "only" 40 picketers, too bad, but hey that's a start. If the call for several weeks had been to picket (instead of just not go) there would have been more.
There's also a vaccum in that no one appears to be organizing or leading this wholemovement, a big lacunae.

Someone will emerge and be inspirational.

That guy Choi was pretty articulate. That heroic air force guy even better. One of them should organize national honesty and service day, a day on which all gays in the military will come out all at once. If there's just 3000 people who do it I really think it would shame Obama into keeping his word and ending DADT. In fact, they could say that. "I believed in Obama's word. So, we're taking him at his word. And being honest is part of being American, and it's our duty as members of the armed forces. In fact, it's in that West Point Code. We tell it like it is, and if there's a problem, we fix it! Now we got a problem of official policy requiring us to lie. So, we're fixing it by not lying any more. Serving America means not lying. WE HAVE NO DOUBT OUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF WASN'T LYING WHEN HE SAID HE WILL END DADT WE TRUST HIM TO KEEP HIS WORD" etc. etc.

Fucking dare him to let thousands be fired.

@6: The call was "the gAyTM is closed!" and all that. There are even image macros, gifs, etc.!

Except the take increased 33% over last year.

I'm thinking the inspirational leaders you're looking for aren't bloggers.

That was a great segment, glad you posted because I go to sleep as The Daily Show ends.
Not that this will do anything to motivate people.
How many people that expressed interest in Dan's Civil Disobedience call are organizing to get out there? How many letters have you written to the President and your Senator?

I've been talking a lot about traveling to protest the White House, I'll be there July 1-4, but that's not the end, it's just the beginning. I'll be standing outside city hall and the state Capitol, talking to every passerby about our betrayal. Maybe you could join me there.
City Hall protest starts July 6.

btw. I'm wondering whether it's OK to laugh at Bruno. Or is it the new gay blackface?

Enigma,

You're correct a lot of us did respond to Dan's Civil Disobedience post. I pledged to help financially, but haven't heard back (I emailed) about it. I have contacted my representatives and the President. I wish I could join you in Washington D.C.. I'm presuming you'll be protesting outside Seattle City Hall on July 6? I'm interested in joining you, I'll have to see what I can swing with the husband and kids. I'd like to become a better ally, making donations and writing letters can feel really passive.

I admire your posts, and your determination. Keep up the good fight.

Peace.

Didn't the Daily Show have a segment about PETA getting pissed at the president for swatting a fly last week?

Just because they mention an issue doesn't mean it's being taken seriously yet.

@13 Thank you for your words. Sometimes it feels like I'm screaming into the void on the internet. Which, everyone really is. But anyway.

I'm happy to announce the final version of the Protest for Human Rights website is live. I have had some technical support and I can't thank those people enough.

I was watching that and said out loud, "Dan Savage is going to LOVE this." It was absolutely brilliant! I don't know where we'd be without political and social satire.

@17: While watching I said out loud that this will probably be posted by either Dan or Dom. Glad to see it posted here at the start of the day rather than later in the afternoon or evening.

@10: There was a great review of "Bruno" in either the Guardian or Telegraph (will try to find the link) that stated that the movie was very clearly anti-homophobes - and that unlike "Borat" this movie had a clear plot and identifiable purpose.

@11: If you're in Canada just go to the comedy network:

The segment was nice, though it was disappointing to see Aravosis's crappy 'analysis' spread even farther. There's enough to criticize Obama for (like his failure to do anything about DADT) without having to make shit up about comparing marriage equality to incest.

@ 21: thanks! i did, but i still think it's a drag that there can't just be one link to the content. i went to the comedy network, found the colbert report, then it automatically started playing the wrong episode (and not being sure what exactly dan was referring to i watched for a bit). then found the right episode.
it is an excellent and pointed commentary.
also, yay lesbians!
