Get Used to Disappointment, Mariners

Posted by Dominic Holden on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Rebecca Hale, spokeswoman for the Mariners, says, "We’re disappointed that we didn’t win," referring to the case the team just lost, attempting to banish a strip club—the horror—from opening near Safeco Filed. The team hasn't decided whether it will appeal the decision. "We’re going to take some time to digest the judge's written decision," she says.

The Mariners are such a worthless embarrassment. For those keeping score: The team lost 101 games, $4.5 million, and had the most poorly attended season since the team moved to Safeco Field last year. And now team also lost this lawsuit that it filed last year. Considering Seattle voters rejected the prudish four-foot rule by a 26-point margin in 2006—indicating that we don't give a shit about strippers closer to us than four feet, and certainly not strippers way down in SoDo—I assume that this lawsuit will keep driving crowds away from Mariners games. Why waste our money on tickets that go to a losing team that uses its dough on an unpopular, bullshit, moralistic crusade?

You know what? Fuck the fucking Mariners. They hosed the commute yesterday and they should die in a fire. 2 hours to get home to Fremont? Suck my balls, rich sports assholes.

Hey Mariners brass, save that money on apeals for signing some of those draft picks. Oh, and lighten the fuck up on some of your rules about fan behavior. For a lot of us hecklers are an important part of the game.

After getting stuck in nightmare Mariners traffic for an hour TWICE this week I have come to believe the Mariners are worse commute terrorists than the Critical Mass kids. At least Critical Mass is once a month, over fast and has a political message (regardless of whether you believe in it).

"I assume that this lawsuit will keep driving crowds away from Mariners games."

I just don't think people care that much. You really think that actual baseball fans (which I'm guessing you are not) will base their decision to go to games on the fact that the M's didn't want a Deja Vu right by the stadium, and not say...team performance?

You having a bad day or something? That's a whole lot of vitriol for an issue that isn't really all that important.

Also, the new Mariners management (the ones who care about baseball and not off-field prudery) are kicking ass and taking names. Things are looking up for our beloved band of losers. Plus, Ichiro. Plus, Felix.

Still, I agree that the off-field mgmt is being a bunch of douchebags.

@ 9) Actually, I'm having a great day, Hernandez--the Mariners just lost their lawsuit. And it's not a trivial issue: Businesses should never be allowed to reassign the acceptable locations for legal free speech--behind closed doors, no less--based on their own moral compass. Just because the Christian Science Reading Room thinks that its clientele would be offended by a bunch of heathens doesn't mean it should be allowed to ban an anarchist bookstore from opening next door. Likewise, the Mariners has no interest other than pious finger-wagging as justification for trying to block a strip club from opening in SoDO.

You need to flush out your headgear, new guy. 101 losses was last season---they're still contending this year.

@ 11 - I dunno, Dominic, I don't think the Mariners were engaging in 'pious finger-wagging' regarding the strip club issue. I think their argument had a legitimate basis: a huge percentage of their fan base is kids, and yeah, maybe the parents of those kids would think twice about parading their brood past a damn strip club to get to the ball park. Strip clubs advertise, ya know.. You can usually tell from the outside what's going on inside....

It's not about trying to keep kids in the dark regarding sexuality or female bodies. It's about the tenor of the neighborhood surrounding Safeco Field, and a strip club would/will change that tenor considerably, not for the better for the Mariners and their clientele. Nothing pious about it.

I've been mystified why there already AREN'T masses of strip clubs down in Sodo, seems like the completely appropriate neighborhood for them. That and county lockups too.

@13: Let me guess, you have kids, right? Because there's something about punching out a couple of rug rats that seems to turn otherwise decent people into self-righteous, pontificating assholes.

@14 - yes but you used that stat, which is dated, as evidence as to why they are currently a "worthless embarrassment".

The team is far from an embarrassment this year and you used old and irrelevant information to try and claim otherwise.

As for the strip club stuff, we've been shoving morality down business's throats for years... Anyone know where I can smoke inside a bar?

@ 17 - Nope, I have no rug rats of my own and have no plans of ever changing that status. (I also wasn't aware that offering my opinion on a comments blog branded me as a 'pontificating asshole'. Um, projecting much?) I'm just conscious of the 'atmosphere' that surrounds strip clubs -- whether they're in Lake City or down on 1st Ave. You can't mistake a strip club for anything other than a strip club, and I'm not even gonna get into the 'atmosphere' surrounding the folks who frequent strip clubs.

Remember when the Rainbow in the U-District was (briefly) replaced by a strip club? The 'hood didn't want it there, the residents didn't feel it was appropriate. Granted, that was a residential neighborhood which the area around Safeco is decidedly not... But my point is: there are better places for strip clubs than right close to Safeco Field. Even a mile or so down 4th Avenue would be more appropriate, is all I'm saying. (I do think the M's were reaching a bit when they tried to declare their surrounds as a "park", but whatever.)

And, before you ask: I am DEFINITELY no prude. You'll just have to take my word on that, I guess. ;-)

You want to strip or see boobies? Do it at home.

I think what is even worse is how poorly the area around Safeco and Qwest has been developed, you would think that with as many people that attend games and events in the area there would be significantly more dinning and drinking options...if strip clubs are all that want to be down there, well, I guess that's tough titties for Safeco.

Really, this is more than a bit over the top. The only one worked up about this is you.

Oh, and if the Mariners were the best team in the league then they'd be justified in their actions? If not, why mention how many games they lost last year? It's really irrelevant and just weakens your already weak argument.

@20 People take their kids to Pike Place Market on a regular basis ... aren't there like two major obvious strip clubs right there? Hasn't stopped anybody from taking their kids there. That place is packed with rugrats, especially during the summer.

It's the city, don't turn it into a yuppie kingdom. It has always been dirty, there is always something to shield your kids from, yadda yadda yadda

It really doesn't matter. People will still go to baseball games. Kids will still learn about boobies at some time in their lives.

Oh, and the building that used to be the Rainbow is now a bar with wait staff that wear lingerie ...

Will in Seattle 26
Let's get honest about why the teams don't want it there.

They're worried people will go there and drink, instead of in the stadiums - they can compete somewhat with bars, but ...

(it's got zilch to do with morals, and they know it)

Free Lunch 28
The people responsible for losing games (i.e., team, its coaches, and its management) have nothing to do with this lawsuit.

If Qwest Field management were complaining instead, would you say it's because the Sounders are hopelessly behind Houston? What a stupid, stupid post, Dominic.
