What He Said

Posted by on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 12:45 PM

John Aravosis:

A smart Senate and House leader....

...would immediately bring up for a vote the repeal of DOMA while the Republicans are reeling from their second bimbo eruption in a week. Let the Republicans start talking about the protection of traditional marriage. Just let them. If anything, the DOMA repeal FORCES the entire country to keep talking about the ongoing GOP sex scandals.

That's pretty brilliant—and we know all talk about the adultery is hurting the GOP: even the Moonies agree.

that might work, if the repubs had even a shred of dignity or shame.

@1 They don't really, or they wouldn't be so hypocritical. (You know some of them are just waiting for their chance in the public shaming square.)
If only the Dems had the backbone to call bullshit when it would be effective.

It is a good idea. Too bad the dems have no spine.

(One of my closest friends works for the Moonie Times as a graphic artist. He's not happy about the right wingery of the paper, but a job's a job.)

Yeah, that wouldn't be viewed as a transparent attempt to capitalize politically on a private matter, would it?

What "spoiler alert" said.

Republicans can't be called out on their hypocrisy because they don't even have a concept of hypocrisy. Their ideas of what "integrity" and "ethics" mean are totally different from yours and mine. It's more important and more virtuous for a public figure to repeat and amplify the moral code — no matter how irrelevant or outdated or unfair or harmful or unrealistic the code is — than to actually live up to the code. Living up to the code is for the little people. And Jesus will forgive you anyway.

Most Americans believe in an idea of moral/ethical responsibility in which individual integrity is essential. This is why Republicans, at least the "family values" set, are a continually shrinking minority.

By all means let's give the Republicans a chance and an issue to regroup and unify against. The hypocrisy hasn't harmed them politically in the past, why the hell do you think it would hurt them now? Homophobia is just that--an IRRATIONAL fear of queers, not a reasoned dialogue about morality and marriage.

Also, Aravosis's argument plays into the social conservatives' frame, that gay rights legislation is immoral and promotes immorality. As if we were just opportunistically waiting for a diversion, a big splashy spectacle of immorality, as our opening to sneakily push our immoral legislation through the process. We don't need to slip under the political radar while hiding in anyone else's immoral shadow, because gay rights are positively moral.

Also, who gives a shit if some dude in South Carolina cheated on his wife?

@1 and @2 are right. They may be reeling right now, but their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

@7: yes--are we really going to hold up monogamy as a measurement of virtue, like the heteronormative folks who are fighting marriage equality so hard?

Shit, it's the chance of a lifetime right now, this week. Big chunk of these far right lunatics are going to be wringing their hands and mourning todays passing of a Pedophile. Nobody is going to be paying attention to a lick of politics for the next week while we have to watch clips of performances on loop and blah-blah-blah.

Pelosi should schedule the vote for the same day next week as Michael Jackson's funeral, anything would pass unnoticed on that day.

Michael Jackson, ironically enough could be to DOMA, what Judy Garland was for Stonewall!!

I think it is sad for the country that character issues seem to do in so many of our promising leaders. --Gary Bauer

So long as sexuality and not dishonesty is determined to be the character issue in question, such issues are going to continue to undermine our representatives. It's too bad that folks like Bauer can't figure that out.

Uriel-238,

Well said.

It's truly pathetic that "sexuality" is viewed as a greater character issue than dishonesty.

Senator Reid (D-NV-mormon) will never entertain taking the lead on DOMA.
