Sole Man

Posted by on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 2:23 PM

The Sierra Club's regional chapter gave Dow Constantine its sole endorsement in the race for King County Executive today. The distinction could prove especially valuable for Constantine, who is trying to set himself apart from Larry Phillips, a fellow County Council Member who is also in the executive race. They got dual endorsements from the King County Democrats on Tuesday, but this announcement bolsters Constantine's chances of maintaining second place in the top-two primary election in August so that he can challenge Republican Susan Hutchison in November.

"We think Phillips's work on the environment is good, too, but we felt we had a duty to our members to endorse who we thought was the best," says Scott Otterson, the Sierra Club Cascade Chapter's political chair.

Constantine impressed with his commitment to continue fighting a gravel mine on Maury Island and his past work pushing the critical areas ordinance to protect rural lands, Otterson says. "He has taken some lumps for the environment in the past." For instance, Constantine's work to protect rural areas was so controversial that Constantine temporarily required police escorts, and Glacier Northwest, the business behind the gravel mine, sued Constantine and former King County Executive Ron Sims in 2004 for blocking the company from building a dock.

nah, they're worried we'll joke about it, Fnarf.

that said, Dominic might want to spell Dow's last name correctly in this article.

Well, I guess he (Jackson, not Will) won't have to worry about being bankrupt any more. Here's hoping he fucked the IRS out of gazillions of dollars.

Being dead does not end claims on your estate by the IRS, fwiw. They still get first dibs, ahead of all other claimants.

If he did have a large estate without effective trusts, this will mean a large shot in the arm to the California Treasury (they get 2nd dibs after the IRS and any federal liens).

Just because you're a lawyer doesn't mean you know tax law.

Even a trust can't shield certain tax claims, but I hope kidlings are ok nonetheless. they must be sad.

Nobody knows tax law like Will in Seattle, dude. Don't even try. Shulman and Geithner are always calling him up, asking for tips.

The unraveling of MJ's estate is going to be the legal imbroglio of our generation. He's currently being sued by about a million people, including most of his former employees, most of his record companies, most of his publishing companies. He probably doesn't HAVE any money saved, and probably owes a hundred million bucks or something, but there's still tons of income pouring in and out through a thousand holes. I'll bet the estate lawyers are fighting over that meat even harder than the freaks on Ebay (there's a copy of "Thriller", 40 million sold, ending soon with 61 bids, $675).

The royalties from the tidal wave of product that's about to come out are going to be very large indeed. Look for supermarket commemoratives as early as tomorrow.

I hear that Target already has plans for a sale because of his death. Little boys' pants are half off.

Fortunately, the other Jackson threads are now open for your commenting enjoyment.

As for the Sierra Club endorsement, it's a big deal for Dow, a big bummer for Phillips and Ross Hunter and ... is Fred Jarrett still in the race?

I hear a million zombies are going to show up in tax court and sue Fnarf for his brains.

Too bad he already lent them out to MJ.
