Seahawks' Schmitt Arrested for DUI

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 12:32 PM

According to the Seattle PI, Owen "runaway beer truck" Schmitt, the Seahawks' starting fullback was arrested Saturday on suspicion of DUI.

Earlier this month, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell indefinitely suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth after he pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and sent out a letter to NFL teams implying the league might be taking a new hard-line stance on players with DUIs.

From the letter:

“Every club should advise its employees of their obligations and our commitment to hold people accountable for alcohol-related violations of law. Please ensure that your employees are aware of the resources available to them, including Safe Ride and similar programs. Let’s make sure that the 2009 season does not bring more tragedy or embarrassment to ourselves and our employees.”
could have a serious impact on Schmitt, Seattle's 2008 fifth round draft pick.

Last year, Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu pleaded guilty to DUI after he was busted driving drunk in Kirkland. I don't believe Tatupu faced suspension following the incident, but with the league's new low-tolerance for DUIs, Schmitt—the Hawks' 2008 fifth round draft pick—might miss some playing time next season if found guilty.

Cut him some slack, you expect some on a paltry $450K a year salary to be taking cabs all the way from Kirkland?

It's tough - when not at practice or at the game, the average non-superstar football life can get kind of boring for players not smart enough to shift gears pretty quick. You spend the extra money, enjoy the cultural perks a little less every day, wait for the injury that finally turns the page, and drink a bit more all the time.

All of the above comes solely from seeing North Dallas Forty about a hundred times. When I happen to see a part of a game the only player whose position I can identify is the quarterback. But I thought it would be fun to comment on a sports post. Thank you very much.

With a nickname like "Runaway Beer Truck", is this at all surprising?

Seriously, any NFL player getting busted for DUI after what Stallworth did is a special kind of idiot. That said, I'm pretty sure we didn't draft Owen Schmitt for this intellectual prowess, common sense and good judgment.

They should get tough for any arrest and conviction they get. The NFL might as well draft their players out of prison for all the good they are.
