According to the Seattle PI, Owen "runaway beer truck" Schmitt, the Seahawks' starting fullback was arrested Saturday on suspicion of DUI.
Earlier this month, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell indefinitely suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth after he pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and sent out a letter to NFL teams implying the league might be taking a new hard-line stance on players with DUIs.
From the letter:
“Every club should advise its employees of their obligations and our commitment to hold people accountable for alcohol-related violations of law. Please ensure that your employees are aware of the resources available to them, including Safe Ride and similar programs. Let’s make sure that the 2009 season does not bring more tragedy or embarrassment to ourselves and our employees.”
could have a serious impact on Schmitt, Seattle's 2008 fifth round draft pick.
Last year, Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu pleaded guilty to DUI after he was busted driving drunk in Kirkland. I don't believe Tatupu faced suspension following the incident, but with the league's new low-tolerance for DUIs, Schmitt—the Hawks' 2008 fifth round draft pick—might miss some playing time next season if found guilty.
