Please Accept Our Apology

Posted by on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 10:40 AM

Maybe 52 years from now someone at the White House will send a letter of apology to all the gay men and women being kicked out of the military today (two a day since Obama was sworn in), the gay men and women being turned away from their partners' bedsides during medical emergencies, the foreign-born spouses of gay men and women who are currently being deported...

How about national coming out day in the military.

Set a deadline, say in 9 months.

If Obama doesn't repeal DADT by then, everyone gay in the military is going to come out, all on the same day. They will wear rainbow armbands with flags whatever.

Meanwhile, there will be marches and rallies by supporters in 50 US cities.

If you get at least 5000 to all come out at once

we will end DADT.

(yes, it's easy to tell others to put their careers on the line, but also you gotta go for it at SOME point and the time is actually NOW.)

Given how long the US and Canada - including the UW - took to apologize to the Nissei (Japanese citizens of said countries) ... yeah, it will probably take until around 2050 to 2060.

I expect Canada will therefore apologize in 2040 and the US will eventually follow.

@2 for a cool action. Don't do it singly - do it en masse - in public - and politely but firmly insist on your rights.

We've never had a DADT policy in the Canadian Military.
We were also one of the first countries to federally recognise same sex marriage too. Canada's already done it's apologizing Will in Seattle. I really hope you guys catch up soon.

I applaud humility, and the integrity to admit we're screw ups. I wish it didn't take so long for us to find the courage to apologize.

The law is called "Don't Ask Don't Tell" right? So has anyone ever been kicked out of the military for ASKING? If not, that just reinforces my impression that this law is just institutionalized lying.

Sorry Dan you miscategorized this post.

It should be under "Homo" and not "Politics" (I wouldn't want you to mistakenly forget to count this in your tally)

I'm sure it was an unintentional error.

@5 - JD, QR&O and CFAO differ with your memory of what it was like in the Canadian military prior to legalized gay marriage. But you raise a good point that there was never a specific federal law as ridiculous as DADT. Still a chargeable offense, mind you.

@2,
Better yet, how about EVERYONE in the military, gay or not, tells their superior officer that they're gay.

DADT would be scrapped in a heartbeat.

By all means, we should crow with sarcasm dripping from our lips as each single LGBT victory happens, and complain about the yet-to-be-realized parts of the LGBT agenda until that Perfect Day when finally everything is done, and then hold a nice circuit party on the Mall and splish-splash in the reflecting pool by the Lincoln Memorial.

@7, Yes. If you are suspected of Homosexual behavior you can be cited for conduct not becoming an officer and put on trial. Your defense is usually weak since you have to lie to stay and then evidence against you is plenty for a military tribunal to discharge you.

@2 I'd go further. Every service man/service woman in the army, navy, and air force who supports the end of DADT should openly come out of the closet even if they aren't actually gay. call it the Sparticus ploy, or the "In and Out" ploy.

@14 - and it can't be on Pride Day - has to be when the media will actually pay attention - I recommend Black History Month, cause it will stand out in sharp contrast then.
