Hard Time

Posted by Dan Savage on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 12:33 PM

South Carolina's Republican Governor Mark Sanford called on Bill Clinton to resign during Monicagate because adultery is wrong, you know, and Clinton perjured himself, which is a crime, you know. Well guess what? Adultery is a crime in South Carolina. Via Think Progress:

Any man or woman who shall be guilty of the crime of adultery or fornication shall be liable to indictment and, on conviction, shall be severally punished by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars or imprisonment for not less than six months nor more than one year or by both fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the court. . . . “Adultery” is the living together and carnal intercourse with each other or habitual carnal intercourse with each other without living together of a man and woman when either is lawfully married to some other person.

Today's GOP: a glass house divided against itself.

Six months in jail? Holy crap.

I wonder if his political opponents will call for prosecution. Like, say, maybe a Lt. Governor who wants to be governor...

Points for gay South Carolinians. One seems to be unable to adulter in a gay way.

It would be hilarious and wonderful if he was prosecuted for that crime.

Apparently an occasional piece on the side isn't adultery, just "habitual carnal intercourse". Good to know.

Oh man. This guy has reeeeeally dug his own grave. It's almost painful to watch this thing unfold. If this whole scandal doesn't edumacate him, nothing's gonna.

Nah, it is the South, after all. They'll just channel that famed denial they're so good at.

Besides, a dirty, filthy, nasty, unChristian secks scandal–and with an illegal Mexitenian no less!–might interrupt their mint julep-on-the-porch time and give everyone the vapors.

that law is only applicable when it comes to other people. not, of course, in my case

They ought to repeal the law, of course, but not make it retroactive, so at least he can be indicted.

So not creative. How about the loss of a finger. Or an ear. Oh, I know. A red "A" tattooed on his forehead.

Not only that, but under South Carolina law, if the woman was a virgin, then Sanford must marry her and her father must provide a dowry of 30 pieces of silver.

Isn't the key question whether adultery is a crime in Argentina? He didn't fuck her in SC, as far as we know.

@16: Tourism for sex doesn't absolve you. If it's illegal here you get prosecuted when you get home.

Technically, he commited it in another country.

Can he pay it in pieces of eight?

Doesn't Lawrance Vs. Texas invalidate that law?

Somehow I doubt that law is enforced.

Well good thing for Mark Sanford that both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson have both done him the courtesy of dying today.

Sanford will be pushed from the headlines for sure now.

Just standard headlines - they'll still cover it on the politico shows on Bloomburg, CNN, CNBC, etc
