Hakuna Licata: Nick Doesn't Need to Worry

Posted by on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 1:34 PM

City Council Member Nick Licata’s reelection campaign has pretty much got his next term in the bag—assuming the winds don't change. He’s outraising his two challengers in this race by over $30,000 each and he has dusted opponents in his previous two reelections by four-to-one margins. At a fundraiser held last night at the Crocodile, he trotted out support from local politicos, including music industry advocates David Meinert and Matt Fox, former city council member Peter Steinbrueck, and a several others running for local office. (Licata’s campaign manager couldn’t get in because he’s only 19 years old, if that reflects on his confidence in the race.) The show hit a crescendo with a solo set by the Presidents of the United States’ lead singer Chris Ballew. The venue was just a few blocks from Spitfire, where, the night before, architect Marty Kaplan held his campaign kickoff. Steinbrueck attended that event, too, where he said, “My loyalty is to Nick.” Kaplan blasted Licata as an anti-Sonics, anti-business obstructionist.

Licata turns Kapln’s argument about the Sonics on its heels, painting the city residents as the wise business investors who jettisoned an unfruitful drain. “I was in favor of a reasonable rate of return from the Sonics,” he says. But he’s not anti-sports, as proven by his work to get the Seattle Storm into Key Arena, Licata notes. He touts his strong record on pushing new parks, better public defense for poor accused of crimes, and high standards for multiple court judges.

“Nick may be an obstructionist to the people Marty represents—those are developers,” said Meinert. “But to the people Nick represents, people who live in the city, Marty is the obstructionist.”

I gotta say, I’m not impressed by some of the anti-development positions that Licata has taken—such as a distaste for the mayor's upzoning in South Lake Union—which probably stems from Licata's willingness to bring NIMBYs to the table. But his open doors have also served as an asset for Licata, who provides a thick résumé of accomplishments (unmatched by Kaplan) fighting for the city’s underdogs and artists.

Licata is also sweeping endorsements: Every district Democrat organization that has voted this year and the King County Democrats have given Licata their sole approval, and 15 of 18 local legislators have endorsed him.

Not to mention support from eight labor unions (Jessie and Marty have yet to get a single labor endorsement), the Sierra Club, the Metropolitan Democratic Club (Jessie and Marty have yet to get a single Democratic Organization endorsement), Governors Lowry, Gardner, and Rosellini, and now Representative Scott White, who changed his sole endorsement of Jessie to a dual endorsement after the 46th District Democrats gave Nick a sole endorsement by over 70%.

btw, this is Nick's 19 year old campaign manager Andrew Lewis.

Don't forget, Jessie Israel received many important endorsements including Washington Conservation Voters, Cascade Bike Club, National Women's Political Caucus, Alki Foundation, Rental Housing Association, City Councilmember Jean Godden, Sen Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Rep Reuven Carlyle, Rep Scott White, Rep Marcie Maxwell, Rep Zach Hudgins, Port Commissioners Bill Bryant, John Creighton, and Gael Tarleton, Hon Bobbe Bridge and many, many others!

Once again the "objective" coverage here is insulting. You forget that Nick has been in for 12 years and he once was an advocate for term limits. It's hard to let go, but geez, have you seen the poor guy lately. He's aged 50 years in this job. We have one of the fastest growing generations under 35, yet our city council's average age is over 60. C'mon guys, some new blood is needed.

Wow those Israel fans are really upset about this age thing.

Most stupid mistake young candidates make: Thinking it's smart to insult people over 60 and try to win a campaign based on the huge, ever growing, thndering youth vote of the under 35-crowd.

Get a clue, dear, in a primary election in Seattle HALF the voters will be over age 50 and about 10% of them will be under age 35.

This is a city council primary. This is not Obama v. Bush. Get a clue.

And btw fuck you very much for attacking Nick Licata. We will remember this came from the Israel partisans and we will remember it a long time.

Dominic,

This pro vs. anti-development schtick is so misleading that it's intellectually dishonest. It's like calling fair trade activists "anti-trade" just because they think government have a role in regulating the economy.

I've never seen Nick oppose development for its own sake. What he opposes is corporate welfare (public investments that don't produce a fair return on those investments), taking unnecessary risks with taxpayer dollars, and the public subsidy of vanity projects that don't serve the public good. See the difference?

Should we call the support of 2-way Mercer, which will cost $200 million and not reduce traffic congestion, "pro-development"? No. We should call it a waste of taxpayer money.

There's plenty of development in Seattle that takes place without sweetheart deals and public subsidies. Paul Allen gets special treatment because he fills the coffers of politicians that matter. Why can't the Stranger differentiate the two? When did being "pro-development" come to mean unregulated growth & public subsidies for private developers?

@ 6) Nobody ever opposes development for development's sake. Everyone's got a reason--some of those reasons are better than others.

@4 - being young doesn't mean you represent youth culture - Nick has that in the bag. Nick has done more for youth culture in Seattle than his opponents could dream of. Accomplishing what Nick has takes time - his age and experience are badges of honor. If Jessie plans to stick around in politics she better let the age thing alone, or she'll end up arguing herself right out of a career.

And Kaplan slamming Nick on the Sonics is laughable. As a lifetime Seattle resident and Sonic's fan, I was nothing but super proud of Nick for taking the risk of a backlash and showing true leadership by standing up to the billionaires who tried to hold Seattle taxpayers hostage to the almost criminal NBA demands. Would Kaplan have given $400 million of taxpayer money to Howard Schulz and his partners so they could take all revenue from the publicly owned Key Arena to support the broken economic model that is the NBA? If so, the fool is Kaplan.

Nick has been unafraid to lead on issues like the Teen Dance Ordinance, the Mercer mess, police oversight, and the Sonics blackmail. Those were all tough and controversial issues other politicians were scared to take on. Attempting to turn those against him is almost pathetic.

Kaplan and Isreal are reaching by attacking Nick in this way. Neither have presented a vision for Seattle that is better than Licata's, and until they do they don't have a chance in this race.

Nick isn't anti-development, he is pro-development that benefits people of all incomes equally. He's voted for more SLU rezones than against. What some seem to associate as being "anti-development" are Nick's efforts to require more public benefit in exchange for the upzones. Yes, some may consider that anti-development, I'm disappointed that you Dom are buying that very tired shtick.

Is Meinert Seattle's new political busybody?

@7: Yes. Ergo to accuse someone of being "anti-development", without any context or explanation, is misleading to say the least.
