AP On Obama's Gay Problem

Posted by on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 5:19 PM

First, you gotta love the headline...

PROMISES, PROMISES: Obama slow on pledge to gays

...a nod to all the furious musical theater queens out there. And the story makes it clear that Monday's reception isn't going to end Obama's gay problem:

President Barack Obama promised gay and lesbian voters he would repeal a law banning their open service in the military, would do away with a federal marriage law and would champion their causes from the White House. In his first five months, he's taken incremental steps that have little real effect and left some people feeling betrayed.... Some gay donors called for a boycott after Obama's Justice Department, in a court filing, compared gay marriages to incest.

...

The White House plans an East Room reception on Monday for gay and lesbian advocates to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Greenwich Village demonstrations at the Stonewall Tavern in New York City. The demonstrations are viewed as the start of the modern gay rights movement. "Unless the president on Monday articulates a strong action plan, and is willing to do it with cameras rolling, it is going to go from bad to worse," said Socarides, the Clinton adviser.

I doubt it'll happen—only docile house homos "good gays," for the most part, have been invited to the White House on Monday—but...

Here's hoping someone at Monday's reception has the courage to go Eartha Kitt on Barack Obama's ass.

They just don't get it.

I'd say many if not most of us were willing to accept the "go slow" approach, given the other issues the administration is dealing with, but then that gawdam DOMA brief hit us like nail-bomb.

The Obama administration is advancing every sadistic, twisted, hateful legal theory against GLBT rights that they can think of.

And despite his pretty and legally meaningless platitudes, that DOMA brief is the official government position on GLBT rights.

Can we get even one reporter to ask Preznit Farce Advocate how he would feel if someone compared his and Michelle's marriage to bigamy and incest??

Is Obama going to be in attendance, I thought I read he wasn't? I hope I'm wrong.

@5

Oh come on...Most were not in a go slow mode. If it wasn't the doma brief, it was something else, always has been. Most in the gay community would only be in a go slow mode if Hillary were President. No one else gets a pass. sorry.

"Only docile house homos have been invited..."

Thank you for saying what the apologists won't. Real progress on LGBT civil rights will be the result of the work of those in the field, not the ones sipping champagne in the White House.

Dan dear, you know I adore you, and I support you working this cause, but really.... "House homos"?

That's just tacky. There's no need to co-opt another group's misery. Maybe you shouldn't spend so much time on americablog.

I don't think anyone is saying "go slow". People are saying "don't lie" and "respect that this battle must be fought on multiple fronts."

Lawdork once again totally wins.

"docile house homos?" is that what you think of Lt. Colonel Victor Fehrenbach?

honestly, this topic brings out the absolute worst in Savage - all heat, no light. all anger, no thought. all scorn, no respect.

there's such a thing as intelligent protest. these Savage tantrums do no one any good.

Okay, the "house homo" thing was over the top. Struck. And if anyone can pull and Eartha, it's Fehrenbach. Here's hoping he does.

If Fehrenbach gets in Obama's face and sings "I Need a Man," I will shit my pants and mail them to the White House.

Go girl!

A truer statement has yet been typed @10.

Really, LC, if there is any one on Slog who is "me..me..me.." it is you. You are constantly stirring up things so that you can be the center of attention - and let's face it, Dan's right, you're "obsessed with [his] homosexuality" than anyone else on Slog.

Wow, Slog is looking sad the past few days. You've got what, 6 people posting? And each post is getting a dozen comments tops? Better post something about FOIE GRAS or CRITICAL MASS or PIT BULLS and get those comments up, Danny boy.

We have to wait until Monday? I had hoped Obama was going to pull something on Friday, or heck during the weekend, to give folks in the parade that something extra about which to be festive. I really want to believe our President gives a crap.

But in the absence of this, Dan I think your venom is rather justified. A reminder of current events to the rest of SLOG: It was an incendiary DJ brief. Good soldiers and specialists are losing their jobs over ambiguous incidents of homosexual conduct. And all this continues to happen despite the blinding news that Thriller is, as of today, a classic.

And, yes, I'm afraid that, even if the usage of house homos is too soon, the sentiment behind it (referring to the ulterior functionality of Obama's party guests) is valid. The president's private party really does appear to be no more than a demonstration that some of his best friends are gay. See?

Whoops. The event brought in nearly $1 million, up from about $750,000 last year, according to a Democratic Party source.

Hyzenthlayk9 @ 18,

Let's hope it works coming from the source, because it's been brought up for months.

Hi Kim:

Yes, of course - if one views the entire LBGT community as an abomination, any urge to buzz and flutter around gay men would be shameful.
