Gushy Feelings of Promotional Pandering

Posted by Dominic Holden on Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 2:30 PM

This is one of the window displays at Macy's on Fourth Avenue:

In case it's not clear, with the glare and all, those are two female mannequins (lesbian figurines!) with a kid (their kid!). Macy's supports gay mannequin parenting! Other windows feature more same-sex mannequin parents with their adorable mannequin children.

Happy pride week!

Or they're just soccer moms with a crotch-dropping in tow.

How dare they exploit GLBTQI families! NO GAY MONEY FOR GAY PANDERING CORPORATIONS!

A much better mannequin campaign than the creepy ones that "Old Navy" has put out.

Very cool.

Did they change the gayby's shirt to be a normal t-shirt? Last week when I went by the kid was wearing the Pride shirt - but it was cut up into a FRINGED belly shirt. For real. Freaked me the fuck out.

I'd rather have advertisers try to sell products predicated on the normality and integration of gay folks than by playing on homophobia.

it's really hard to make gays happy, isn't it?

Hey, Dominic, what's up with that energetic spring in your step, posting on SLOG at 10:00 PM last night?

Would you rather Macy's ignore this week? Quit being so cynical.

Macy's is awesome! Don't they do a float in the pride parade every year?

Also @5 FTW lol!!!!

@ 9) I'm required--as per my contract--to be cynical. The contract also requires me to maintain a spring in my step at all hours of the night. But, like the post says, this display gave me gushy feelings. We are winning: on judge's benches, at state capitols, and in display windows.

Macy's is really supportive of their gay employees. I went to the Cincinnati pride parade a couple of weeks ago (where Macy's is based) and most of the major corporations based in Cincinnati had giant groups of gay employees walking. Macy's, Procter & Gamble, Delta... I have photos up on my blog (http://blog.tyznik.com).

Why do you hate daycare providers so?

Cause that's what they probably are.

Hey, Macy's are pretty good guys, all things considered. They're not even remotely homophobic as an organization. And considering the flak they're likely to get for these window displays from mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers, I think it's an admirable move even if it isn't perfect.

God I wish lesbians in Seattle had bodies like that. I suppose it'd be hard to sell a brand with overweight frat-boy style women in a window.

If we let gays marry, mannequin marriage is natural to follow.

#17: A lot of us do (or at least we're thin and are somewhat in shape). Where are you finding your lesbians? Tip 1: Avoid sports.

@22 Tip 2: Go somewhere other than Seattle, apparently. I can't find any single lesbians in this town, skinny or no.

McGee 24
That can't be a lesbian window display. There's no flannel or softball equipment anywhere.
