More From Here to Eternity

In America, a fly is killed by the president; in Britian, a woman is killed by cows.

A woman was trampled to death by cows while walking her dogs in northern England, police said Monday.
Experts say cows can become aggressive if they feel their calves are being threatened.

The 49-year-old died at the scene, said a press officer for North Yorkshire police, where the incident took place on Sunday just after noon local time (7 a.m. ET).

"She had two dogs with her," said the spokeswoman, who declined to be named in line with police policy. They were not on a leash, she added.

"We believe the cows may have gotten protective of their calves," she said.

Let me guess: It was so important you felt the need to say it twice.

The dogs probably had enough sense to run away.

The obvious solution is to replace cows with bison.

They use 1/20th the range area to produce the same amount of meat and contribute 1/10th as much per pound of meat as cows do.

Plus, when they gore you, they mean it. That will toughen up the humans and help solve over-population too.

Huh. I'm looking out my window at a bunch of cows huddled into a shed a little too small for them all - leaving the calves outside trying to wiggle their way in.

So I'm forced to consider this just another case of cries of "Think of the *children*!" being used to cover up the real crime ...

That's quite a comparison, Professor. I imagine the women buzz about your head soaking up your pearls of wisdom.

The cow can only be a cow, or something.

@10: It might help to read Charles's posts as though they are poetry. This one is more or less iambic, and a few line breaks makes it work.

In America, a fly
is killed by the president;
in Britain, a woman is killed
by cows.

What a coincidence, because I just finished reading Posy Simmonds' excellent "Tamara Drewe" graphic novel, and (spoiler) that's what happens to one of the protagonists.
