Meanwhile in Portland

Posted by on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 10:28 AM

This just in:

After a six-month investigation, Oregon Attorney General John Kroger found no evidence that Portland Mayor Sam Adams broke the law by engaging in a relationship with Beau Breedlove.

In a report released this morning, Kroger said Breedlove lacked credibility as a witness, and state investigators could find no other witness to corroborate his account of an underage relationship with Adams. State investigators interviewed 57 witnesses during the course of their inquiry.

"Here, there are serious questions about the credibility of Breedlove's account, due to his prior inconsistent statements, the lack of corroborating witnesses or evidence, his attempt to gain personally from matters related to his involvement with Adams and his prior criminal record," the report states.

Oregon's AG also found no evidence that Adams hired former Stranger news writer—and at the time the Portland Mercury's news editor—Amy Jenniges to stop her from writing a story about his relationship with Breedlove.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hopefully our hoodie-wearing activist will cram this up his flared nostrils along with his feigned civility.

I thought that Adams pretty much admitted to everything except sex. And, unless Breedlove told everybody (which some people might, but if your boyfriend could go to jail for it, you tend to keep it a secret) of course nobody is going to be able to corroborate the story.

And, I don't think they had any voyeurs in on their sex romps (though, I would love it if a porn vid of Sam Adams surfaced...yum).

Maybe the AG just really likes Adams.

@2: Nah, I can't see Kroger being injudicious in this respect. He helped take down Enron, for example, in light of attempts at a, well, "bribe" seems inadequate at this point, but you get the idea.

Everyone, let's blame the underage victim like a girl who wore slutty clothes and was asking for it!

@6 A few months sure turned me into a victim. I know that before I was 18, I was so not ready for sex. And, then, kaBAM. Nature endowed me with the wisdom to know exactly how I wanted it, and who I wanted it from. I became so emotionally ready for it. I would never be scarred from love and sex again.

...

Was that too understated for sarcasm?

@6: Yes, in a case where lying was called "so wrong, so so wrong", let's excuse it when one of the poor younglings does it to attempt to destroy a career for personal gain.

After all, it's not like he floated an accusation of underaged sex out there.

The Unspoken 9
He was underage and the mayor was in a position of power.

Laws are laws.

I understand that we can't all agree on a date or age that your enlightenment becomes manifest, at 7, laws are laws. Work to get them changed.

The excusing and grousing over this is pretty gross.

one was UNDERAGE. the other was in a position of POWER.

(the next excuse will be it wasn't a direct position of power, I bet)

@6, you forgot that the underage victim then took off his clothes for a gay porn magazine to capitalize on his trauma. No judgment; I'm just saying...

OK right they didn't have sex, so my number 9 is probably void,

but it's still pretty gross and your hero mayor lied about it.

Lied lied lied. Liar, liar, liar.

10: don't victims of abuse often turn into strippers and sluts after disregarding their body? Yeah. they do.

@11: Don't forget, again, that the hushed accusation being floated was that the Mayor had sex with a minor. Political poison is acknowledging an untrue rumor with an admission of an insignificant but related act. "We didn't have sex" really meant "we didn't have sex before he was legal", but Adams clearly could not have said that because nobody had made the outright accusation at the time, they just kept it as a rumor.

And as we saw, when he said "we did have sex when he was 18", it all hit the fan. That was likely the hope, that he would say when the rumor first came out that they did have sex but that Breedlove was legal. People would say, "wellllll, can't take that risk" and Sho Dozono would be sitting in City Hall, pilfering from public funds.

Except Adams waited. Oops.

Also remember that Adams had absolutely no power over Breedlove, and it was likely that Breedlove wrongly felt his position in Salem had some kind of power over Adams.

9, Are you in possession of any evidence not seen by the Oregon Attorney General, or are you just presenting unsupported supposition as fact?

How was the mayor of the city of Portland in power over someone who worked for the state government in another city?

You say a bunch of shit about it not being a position of power

17, No, that was The Unspoken trying to shut down an argument that he knows he can't win. I say 9 should support the claim that Adams was in a position of power over Breedlove, and provide credible evidence that despite a 6 month investigation finding no illegality, that laws were broken.

Wait, did I miss something here? Wasn't it just stated that Breedlove most likely was NOT underage when they started fucking? So what's all this shit about an underage victim?

Not a surprising conclusion. The problem wasn't the illegality as much as lack of professionalism on the part of the Mayor- his dishonesty about his relationship, his informal hiring process for Ruiz.

The Slog post (and many comments) misstate the AG's report.

Not exoneration, not "no evidence", but the equivalent of a "Not Proven" verdict. Insufficient evidence to sustain a conviction, especially considering likely defense attacks on the credibility of the key witness. Likewise in the mater of Ms. Ruiz - insufficient evidence to sustain a criminal charge.

Read the report before you make things up, RonK. "There is no evidence that Adams hired Ruiz in an effort to cover-up her investigation and reporting of the Breedlove/Adams story."
