And Now for Something Completely Different...

Hey Stranger,

Since so many Slog stories highlight (rightly) Christians being assholes to the glbtq community, why don't you give the kind Queer Episcopalians (who Driscoll hates, by the way) a Slog shoutout for hosting the city's first (to my knowledge?) Pride Eucharist and Party tonight, June 21 from 7 - 10:30 pm at Skinner Auditorium at St. Mark's Cathedral? We have DJ Ponyboy, a bunch of men in dresses, and the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Peace,
Tim Mathis
Community Catalyst
Episcopal Diocese of Olympia

Dear Tim: Your wish is my command.

Also, I hope when guests enter the party, they're given euchawristbands. Baddum ching.

Ritual cannibalism on pride. Charming. I"d rather swallow the real thing , thank you. By the way, it's still myth and superstition no matter who believes it. Celebrating a religion that has been used to slaughter and rape it's way through the last two thousand years is especially wrong when it is now being used to persecute your own people.

If I hadn't been raised Episcopal, I'd have given up on Christianity 100% of the way Lord knows how many years ago. I'd be poorer for it, I think. Dudes like Shelby Spong, CS Lewis, and yes, Bishop Gene Robinson have led me to a certain peace with God and Jesus that no other Christian teaching ever could.

Sounds great. Perfect antidote to the Fred Phelps Dog and Pony Show last weekend.

I wonder if people have to show ID to get a sample of the sacramental wine...

Instead of wasting time and energy having some gay-friendly pseudo-religious party...

How about this; instead of clinging on to an old superstition which currently is being used to foment and justify bigotry against you and others, you let go of the obviously bullshit pile of crap and move on intellectually.

I dunno, maybe it's just me.

As to Jesus of Nazareth, I have some doubts as to his divinity.

As a brother to one sister who is wiccan and another who is atheist, let me just say, "Back off a little, will ya, people?"

Not all Christians are Fundies just like not all Muslims are Terrorists. Making blanket statements like these about Christians is just as waspy and spiteful as "Christians" saying derogatory things about homosexuals.

I am gay and I was raised Lutheran by a father who couldn't care less about church and a mom who reveled in it as a social heirarchy ranking system. I have every right to bash Christianity.
But let 'em have their beliefs. This goes with all religions.
If people believe it helps them, then it does. What a group of people do behind closed doors away from you is their own business. Granted there are those who make it their business to interfere with your (and my own) business, lumping everyone together is asinine.
The way to acceptance isn't a blanket condemnation, but to reach out to those who are as equally disgusted with their fellow [Religious Persons] and recognize them as apart from the bigotry.

/vent. (sorry)

P.S. Hell if I know what "Episcopalian" is. Sounds like something Todd did to Sarah.

It's true, we aren't all fundamentalists and/or homo-haters, but I understand why we're often viewed that way. I hope to some day meet you all.

I wish you joy.

OK, I know punk rock has been dead for a long time, but now that Episcopalians are co-opting the xeroxed punk rock flyer aesthetic I think it's safe to say that punk rock's zombie corpse has been destroyed forever and ever.

Just back from the Eucharist, and my favorite comment is definitely john t at 13.

In an unrelated comment, an important thing to know about this event was that it was primarily organized by a group of gay men, some of whom are Episcopalian, some of whom aren't. Not an event to convert any supposedly lost, and not an event to promote a specific theology or superstition (everyone can believe whatever crazy thing they choose). It was an attempt (in my view anyway) to offer a religious blessing to the queers who usually get religious curses. Take that as you will, or don't. Whatever.

The Eucharist before Pride Week was part of a series of church sponsored fundraiser events we call 'Conspiracy' (cultural events with cause). http://www.conspiracyww.org
The Eucharist before Pride Week raised an offering of $705.00 to be donated to the The Episcopal Technological and Vocational Training Center in Ramallah (West Bank).

As a former alter boy, I'm glad that Episcopalians are taking an active stand on insisting on their rights.
