And Now for Something Completely Different...

Hey Stranger,

Since so many Slog stories highlight (rightly) Christians being assholes to the glbtq community, why don't you give the kind Queer Episcopalians (who Driscoll hates, by the way) a Slog shoutout for hosting the city's first (to my knowledge?) Pride Eucharist and Party tonight, June 21 from 7 - 10:30 pm at Skinner Auditorium at St. Mark's Cathedral? We have DJ Ponyboy, a bunch of men in dresses, and the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Peace,
Tim Mathis

Dear Tim: Your wish is my command.

Also, I hope when guests enter the party, they're given euchawristbands. Baddum ching.

Famous Last Words

How far in advance does the NYT Magazine go to press again?

"They were saying this three years ago, that I couldn't last, and after four years, I'm better than I ever was. This irritates me, no? I'm tired of people telling me I can't go on playing tennis like this."

But Nadal couldn't go on—at least for now. But we Nadalists have faith that Rafael will be back.

Hollywood Values

Posted by Dan Savage on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 11:03 AM

During the Letterman shitstorm Sarah Palin blasted "Hollywood/New York entertainers" for not having the same values as "the rest of America." But if Sarah and Todd Palin's values where a little closer to the "Hollywood values" modeled by Zac Efron's mom...

“My mom is like, ‘Zac, what did you buy in a sex shop?’ I was like ‘Mom, calm down, it’s not a sex shop.’ She wouldn’t have any of it. She’s like, ‘I knew you were being sexual!’” he admitted. “But she understood. My stocking was full of condoms this Christmas. She buys me the economy box.”

...David Letterman, like, wouldn't be out there cracking jokes about their daughter, Bristol "America's Top Abstinence Spokesmodel" Palin. And speaking of going Hollywood:

Levi Johnston is now officially an aspiring actor and model. And according to his new manager Tank Jones, he is getting closer to a clinching a deal that will help him support the baby son he fathered with his former girlfriend, Bristol Palin. "There's offers on the table for a little bit of everything—sitcom appearances, a reality show, some modeling," Jones tells PEOPLE. "We haven't signed anything, but there's offers." Jones declined to give specific details.

If Levi winds up in Hollywood Zac Efron's mom should pull together a welcome-to-Hollywood gift basket for him. Because if anyone needs the influence of a responsible adult in his life, it's Todd and Sarah Palin's ex-future-son-in-law.

Film

'O'Horten'

Okay, bear with me. This is a tough sell, and I know it's a tough sell because my coworkers made fun of me for an hour after I pitched it. O'Horten is a very slow, very Norwegian, almost imperceptibly comedic comedy about a retired train conductor. Horten smokes his pipe! Horten falls asleep in the wrong places! Horten makes friends with a dog! It sounds like just another fusty, folksy movie about the melancholic cuteness of old age (and it kind of is). But the film's meticulous reserve—it embraces oddness while absolutely refusing to goof off—makes it work. It's so sweet, you guys, I swear! (See Movie Times: thestranger.com/film.)

Reading Today

d27b/1245452097-4894_114643799782_687524782_2898119_3295253_n.jpgOne reading and one book party today. At 2 pm, Mike Farrell, who is an actor, reads at Elliott Bay Book Company from Of Mule and Man, which is a book about his last book tour. Maybe if you go and ask an interesting question, you can wind up in his next book, which will probably be about this book tour.

Then! At Moe Bar at 5 pm, it's a launch party for Adrian Ryan's Way Too Gay Gay Seattle Survival Guide. Mr. Adrian Ryan will be in attendance. He will probably let you touch him if you ask nicely. Supposedly the party is open to the public until 7pm, at which point it becomes private. We'll see how that goes. But you should be there at 5 pm for the gay-larity. This is the book event of the day, for sure.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.
