Meanwhile in Iran

Not for the faint of heart:

Via Andrew Sullivan—whose blogging on the uprising in Iran remains required reading.

Video removed due to terms of violation. Mirror?

Let's start a movement of solidarity with our friends in Iran. We should all wear green bands or something to show that we understand and support them, as well as we can....I'm sure you could say it slightly more eloquently than my coffee rattled fingers.

I was discouraged about the internet back in 2004 when Bush won, but maybe it's time to make sure it's used to inform many more people now.

How does he reconcile any of this with his strong neocon roots? He seems ok some days, then backslides into douchiness without any hint of awareness.

I don't know if anyone else has already linked to this, but it so happens the NY Times op-ed pages now feature a columnist who's a real Iran expert, Roger Cohen. Cohen's already written a number of columns trying to get Americans past the evil caricature we're presented of Iran, while still not dismissing how nasty that regime is.

Well, Cohen has a great column today that has really convinced me that Pres. Obama has to say something about the govt.-backed violence.
TEHRAN — This has become the city of whispers. Many of the people I spoke to when I arrived last week are in prison. Stabbings and shootings punctuate the night. Fear rushes down alleys and dead ends. Still the whispering continues.

“Tomorrow, Vanak Square.” Or “Four o’clock, Imam Khomeini Square.” Or “Everyone wear black.”

An election result was announced a week ago that, in the words of the most senior opposition ayatollah, Hossein Ali Montazeri, “no wise person in their right mind can believe.”

Also, I really appreciate that Sullivan has recognized that Iran is the most important place in the world right now.

The regime still has the weapons and the army. It is a theocracy. It will not be an easy thing to move to a secular state. It will take the blood of many people.

Greg @11, it's the classic Riddle of Steel. The jackboot and truncheon are also wielded by hands of flesh, and they can kill only so much of their own before coming to question their own motives.

The old garde has demonstrated they care naught for lives, so long as they stay in power. The revolutionaries have demonstrated they're willing to die before living with the continued oppression. In the short game, either the police or the international community will have to turn around.

It's already, at very best for the regime, a Pyrrhic victory. A beaten down revolution will only devolve into partisan activity, and Iran will have no friends abroad.

In the meantime, the up-close-and-personal movies and images being broadcast and archived are changing the face of the revolution that defines Iran.

Two things from huffpo:

About the girl in the video and the doctor who tried to save her:

Basij shots to death a young woman in Tehran's Saturday June 20th protests At 19:05 June 20th Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st. A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim's chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes. The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St. The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know.

and from the White House
The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples' belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

Just watched the re-instated longer video, instead of the shortened one... the first video was difficult, but this one was near impossible to watch. Especially with that translation @28...

That commenter on the youtube site, oppositereaction, that @21 pointed out, has been posting for hours trying to convince people that the video is a fake ("don't believe everything you read/see", etc.). "The bigot in the white house believes they deserve nukes"? WTF is that supposed to mean? If Nukes have anything to do with Americans fealings about this it is that we have zero faith or trust in the current regime with them. Best case scenario is we hope the opposition would not be persuing them. I don't know why the rest of our nation feels the way they do, but I cans say that this kind of uprising against an oppressive regime of religious wingnuts always gives me hope. Where the fuck was even 1% of this kind of activity when Bush stole that first election. Oh, we had jobs and oppressive mortgages back then I guess.

@37 Yes, the information is being spread around Iran both internally and via info that gets in. People are constantly setting up and changing proxies so that people can get information both ways. People in Iran are spreading word of international protests as well as bringing in info from the outside about things like which embassies are taking the injured.

And @59? That information is getting out and is making more and more people aware of what is going on in a tangible way - this is a good thing.

You see, this video totally proves Bush was wrong. Iran isn't on the axis of evil. And these people that are protesting don't seem to understand that, while they don't have a meaningful vote, at least when the government shoots them in the neck they get nationalized health insurance. That's why their better than us.

We just haven't spent enough time being "diplomatic" with them like our friends in France. We should be talking and talking and talking long enough for them to get their French-engineered, Russian-fueled reactors up to production levels. Really, they don't mean anyone any harm. We're just too judgmental, with our inherently bad Western ways - like the respect for human life, free speech, freedom of assembly, petition of grievances and other such total nonsense.

The Iranian government isn't a regime. We just need to send Rick Steve's over there to make some videos that make us feel like we don't understand their government. We're the bad guys in the world. We totally suck.

61: you're right! We're being too soft on Iran! We should BOMB them like McCain and Bush would have done!

Now THERE'S a great way to show support for the Iranian protesters: drop bombs on their apartments and workplaces. That'll show them our great Western respect for human life. Just like in Iraq!

We're the bad guys in the world. We totally suck.

There are a surprisingly large number of people in the world who would agree with you on that, most of them in countries where the US has supported dictatorships. Such as Iran, circa 1979.
