Where Have You Been All My Life, Daniel Tosh?

Posted by David Schmader on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 11:10 AM

I know, I know: Daniel Tosh has been doing stand-up for years, and a quick scan of his Wikiquote page reveals him to be an incredibly funny man.

But now he's got this weekly television show, Tosh.0, featuring our charming host offering up/breaking down "the best of the web!", with a heaping helping of obsessive follow-through.

Case in point: The segment called "Web Redemption", wherein Tosh hunts down notorious viral video "celebrities"—Afro Ninja, that guy who puked during a TV interview—and gives them a chance to redeem themselves. My fave-to-date features Miss Teen South Carolina, whose ridiculous pageant babblings made her an international laughingstock.

Then came Tosh:

Aside from being an exceedingly funny man, he's also a bit of a masochist, as seen in this clip where he self-tests several internet memes in rapid succession.

In short: Tosh.O is like the justly beloved The Soup (Joel McHale, swoon!), only devoted to the web, and much weirder, scarier, and funnier. (For instance, Tosh isn't above showing perfectly SFW-but-psychologically damaging crush videos*.) If you like to be lightly upset while you laugh really hard, watch it.

*Featured crush video involves no crushed animals or insects, just bread, hence the title, "How Croutons Are Made."

It seems like she's saying that being ridiculed by 50 million + viewers for being a clueless idiot hasn't harmed her modeling career or damaged her ambitions in any way, and she's perfectly happy how things worked out. In other words, the moral of this story is that it's better to be young, pretty, blonde and famous, or even infamous, than it is to be smarter than a tube of toothpaste.

urgh. I'm glad he only showed the food crush videos. The first thing that comes to mind when I see "crush videos" is definitely not food. It's women in high heels crushing mice and baby bats and stuff. Dan would heart it.

I have tried to watch Tosh.0 four times now and am consigning it to the Not Ever To Be Watched category along with the current Tonight Show.

I think he works really well in the format of the show. I laughed anyhow. His stand-up I wasn't into.

I beg to differ. Funny? Yes Funnier? No.

15: My emotional judgments are completely factual, for everyone, for all time. (Also, I didn't say 'funnier'. I said 'much funnier.')

Web soup is cute enough. But Tosh & co. cultivate an all-encompassing, vaguely "TV Carnage"-ish vibe that is uniquely intoxicating.

yeah. a tv show showing things that were old on the internet a week before, with accompanying commentary on said internet content that is available, in many more locations, by much funnier people than "Tosh" (Tosh.O"????? really???? this has the life expectancy of the macarena!!!)

good LORD this is so Maxim magazine its not even worth a critique!

uniquely intoxicating???
its a show about THE INTERNET! INTERNET POSTINGS ARE OBSOLETE 5 MINUTES AFTER PUBLICATION.

and the dudes a fucking choad. jesus, schmader-stop letting your dick do your talking for you.

I'm a huge fan of Daniel Tosh's stand-up. I'm not sure what I think of Tosh.0...

Somewhat ironically, I don't know if I have the stomach for it.

I will say that the second episode--filmed in front of a live studio audience, which helps Tosh play to his strengths--was much more enjoyable than the first. (And the fact that Daniel called Carlos Mencia "Ned" on ComedyCentral was a particular treat for some of us!)

The more Tosh there is in Tosh.0, the more I'll like it.

Web Soup is definitely a closer clone of The Soup than Tosh.0, and can be easier to enjoy casually...but Chris Hardwick (of the comedy/music duo Hard & Phirm) definitely has his nerd/alt-comedy cred.

Both of these shows are better than WebJunk w/Jim Breuer ever was...

I just wish someone would skip the cheap "make fun of other people's stuff" show design and give either Hardwick or Tosh the chance to create THEIR show.

Eventually, don't we have to hope that funny, talented people will be given the chance to create...and not just comment?

20: If my dick was talking (which it doesn't, but thanks?), I'd be praising the genius hilarity of "Yes, Dear," the sucktastic show starring my celebrity dreamdate, eight-years-ago Mike O'Malley...

(I'd argue the finer points of alleged web obsolescence but you's too trolly.)

Keyboard Kato was fantastic! :D

Sorry Dave, "much funnier." Pardon the paraphrasing.

I do like how a good comedian, like him or Joel, can sort of sit there for a while and goofily grin and not say anything and they still communicate humor.

Whenever I see Chris Hardwick I am transported back to Singled Out. It makes me feel kind of old. He is one of those magical people, like Paul Rudd, who seems to be getting hotter as he gets older. How do they do that? Lucky bastards.

@11 - the milk challenge had my wife and I in super stitches last night. Totally hilarious.

Schmader I totally agree, the show is damn funny. There are certain segments that I haven't enjoyed, lots of the crappy monologue, but last night's show seemed to be done well in all areas.

Quote of the week: "I forgot to mention my stomach lining sometimes bleeds."

I'd also like to pipe in with my agreement, David. Tosh.0 is fantastic. His stand-up is great, and this show's format—esp. with the live audience, as someone else noted—suits him perfectly.

Plus, he brought back the Demi Moore bush-shot. As you say: both frightening and funny.

so bad.

a show for people without computers. or without friends with computers.

why?

and dude is way, way unfunny. belongs in an applebees commercial, or in the next american pie. we are in agreement that those are bad things, right?
