Stabbing In the University District, Violent Robbery in South Seattle

Posted by on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 11:38 AM

Seattle police are investigating two serious assaults which took place in West Seattle and the University District last night.

At about 6:30 pm, police received a 911 call about a group of men assaulting and robbing a man in his 20s near 13th Avenue S and S Holgate. Police arrested a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man in connection with the robbery but are still looking for other suspects. Police say the robbery victim was taken to Harborview with life-threatening injuries.

The incident is being investigated by SPD homicide detectives who, according to SPD spokeswoman Renee Witt, typically handle "pretty serious assaults."

Just after midnight, police also arrested another man for an apparently racially motivated assault at a University District bar.

SPD officers were called to a bar at University Way NE and NE 43rd Street after, police say, an "extremely intoxicated" white man in his 30s directed several racial slurs at a black man in the bar in an attempt to start a fight.

According to police, the suspect then slashed the victim's face and stabbed him in the arm. He was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault. The victim was treated at the scene and transported to Harborview.

Pretty sure that 13th Ave S & S Holgate is actually Beacon Hill, not West Seattle or South Seattle.

That is clearly not a West Seattle address (it's Beacon Hill)

Jonah has proven himself to be inept with nearly every post.

What the fuck is wrong with you, dude?

Earl's is at 45th. At 43rd they're probably talking either Finn MacCool's or Big Time.

I was at the Bigtime until about midnight last night and didn't see or hear anything. Much bigger crowd at Finn McCools at that hour, so that would be my guess.

Jason, as you know Earl's is in between 43rd and 45th. The incident took place at 4333 University Way NE, which is Earl's address.

Not that I'm surprised.

The only bars at 43rd and the Ave are Flowers and Kai's. It has to be one of those two. The question is, which one? The vegetarian restaurant / cocktail lounge? Or the UW drama department hangout?

It was Earl's. My bedroom window is directly across the alley behind that shithole, and I had the pleasure of listening to the aftermath.

If the guy who was attacked was gay we'd never hear the end of it here at Slog. Instead it's a black guy so it gets buried.

I don't see what everyone is getting so worked up about. It's just violent crime. Our police are doing all they can to investigate and prosecute betting on card games, intimate massage and sex by mutual agreement between adults (sometimes involving compensation), and adult possession of substances the federal government prohibits. Are these other crimes really such a big deal in the scheme of things? You can't justify a fancy SWAT team with the investigation of violent crime. Ho, hum.

i'm just curious, why didn't we hear about the ethnicity of the individuals of the OTHER crime? why did we need to know that the drunk white guy was attacking a black guy? the race of the individuals could have been totally left out. i understand that he was shouting racial slurs, but what do we know about the other crime? this article seems like it was written in a very slanted manner to get a certain response. seems like weak reporting to me. 'glad that people on the comments forums aren't biting on the authors' obvious fishing for desired reactions.

Anybody who went to Earl's regularly is best served hiding their identity behind an anonymous handle. Because, really, people. Earl's? The place where you have to specify when you want drinks WITHOUT roofies?
