Ohm My God!*

Posted by on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 3:34 PM

Okay, it's not the worst story in the world. (This is.) Still, there can be no denying the existential horror that must accompany being sentenced to six months in prison for pirating a copy of Mike Myers' thoroughly and painfully horrific comedy The Love Guru. From the Wall Street Journal:

Jack Yates, 28, was sentenced to six months in prison today for making an unauthorized pre-release copy of “The Love Guru,” the Mike Myers comedy that Paramount Pictures released last summer. Yates made the illegal DVD when he worked at a Burbank-based tape duplication company that Paramount hired last May to make a promotional DVD copy of the film to show on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

Six months of incarceration, for this:

I hope he's on suicide watch. Thanks for the heads-up, Defamer.

* This stupid joke is exactly what The Love Guru deserves.

The movie seems almost as lame as the one self styled guru/shaman I once encountered. Let's just say it explained why the word sham comes just before the word shaman in the dictionary.

For the record, "Om my god" would be the appropriate dumb joke. "Ohm my god" would be a dumb electrician joke.

The recording industry wants ridiculous sentencing for such petty crimes. If they want to put a man in prison for having a copy of a film, let them fucking pay the cost of jailing him! Otherwise, give the guy community service for cryeye!

@7,

Whatever. It's not like he made a copy in the comfort of his own home. Paramount trusted him and the company he worked for to do their jobs and not take advantage. He deserves to be sued into bankruptcy, not imprisoned, but this also isn't simple piracy.

Jesus, could we get a warning about that link to the other story? I was expecting a longer jail term for pirating Jonas Brothers or something. Now I can't shut my eyes.

While we're on the topic of copyright, let us not overlook the new damages ordered against Jammie Thomas-Rasset for infringing the copyrights in 24 songs via KaZaA. She was ordered to pay $1.9M in damages, up from the original $222k.

Here's a quick article about it that mentions two potential challenges to the damages award:

That was among one of the worst movies ever made. Mike Meyers should do six months just for making it.

@10 beat me to it. $1.9M fine for petty theft. Punishment system fails again.

So when his prison's inmates ask him what he did to get himself in the slammer, he's going to be telling them, "ever seen the Love Guru with Mike Myers? Well, ...."
