Movement

Posted by Dan Savage on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 2:06 PM

Greg Sargent:

The Obama Justice Department has reached out to major gay rights organizations and scheduled a private meeting for next week with the groups, in an apparent effort to smooth over tensions in the wake of the controversy over the administration’s defense in court of the Defense of Marriage Act. Tracy Russo, a spokesperson for Justice, confirmed the meeting to me, after I posted below that top gay rights lawyers were miffed that administration lawyers had rebuffed their requests to meet and discuss ongoing litigation involving DOMA.

At the meeting—which hasn’t been announced and is expected to include leading gay rights groups like GLAD and Lambda Legal—both sides are expected to hash out how to proceed with pending DOMA cases.... It’s [an] open question whether the meeting will resolve broader tensions in what has been an unexpectedly rocky relationship.

I honestly don't expect much to come out of this meeting. Probably be the administration telling them if you don't like it vote for Republican candidates. And then laugh them out of the building.

What's the plan, Dan? Should we tar and feather him at the meeting? Call him the N word?

@3 Is there a point to your rantings? Or are you just being a douche for the sake seeing the inside of a pussy?

Yes. This is what democracy is about, this is why we have to voice our outrage, this is the people in action. We have now yanked the ear of the president toward us and can hopefully get him to do the right thing. To do the things he promised to do. YES!

how DARE he call a meeting with us!

OK everyone, we're going into full-on bitch mode. Let's ignore him until he repeals DOMA! This is totally like a scorned boyfriend trying to get back with us.

Dan's choice of the word "movement" for the title of this piece is appropriate.

Often, the word "movement" is just a polite way to describe the production of poop.

That description may be appropriate for the Obama administration's handling of this topic.

Then again, it could also describe the Slog's emotive and grand-standing coverage of this topic.

Then someone is going to want a list of everyone from every organization that joined the meeting so that they publish it.

I too have been appalled and enraged by the recent actions/inactions of the Obama administration.

That said, I think this is very good news, and I predict movement in the right direction.

So, has anyone done up flyers for the Actions you'll be doing, so that they're ready for Gay Pride Day?

And, by the way, why limit it to a day - make it a week.

Have fun at the Fremont Solstice Parade tomorrow!

I can't believe Justice wasn't already strategizing with Lambda. *that* baffles the mind. They should have know the whole issues of "having" to defend a law they want to overturn would benefit from coordinating with the people who have been working towards that goal all along. Let alone avoiding PISSING OFF key constituents.

Key constituents ... no, don't think I saw anything from Big Pharma, Big Finance, or Big Insurance about this.

A discussion on how to proceed with DOMA cases? WTF? how to proceed? WT flying F?

the only way to proceed is for Obama to get on board with truth, justice, the American way including EQUALITY AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL and start working to get DOMA struck down as unconstitutional.

There is really nothing to haggle over.

If I were Lambda that's what I'd say "Thanks, but we thing the situation is clear. Our dignity will not be haggled over. Our position needs no wordsmithing. There's nothing to negotiate."

Because you know if you start talking about how the knife should only be twisted to a 45 degree angle, only, unless it's between 9 and 10 pm, and it should only be placed between the 4th and 5th vertebrae, you know, you're not negotiating,

you're just being a (pardon the term ) pussy.
