Posted by Lindy West on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 10:46 AM

Did you miss SIFF for some reason? Out of town? Big project at work? Iron lung? Fall down an abandoned mine shaft? Rip Van Winkle situation? Darby O'Gill and the Little People? Incredible Mr. Limpet? Wait, what were we talking about again? Where am I?

Uhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm........right. If you missed SIFF but you desperately wish you had seen the best, SIMPLY THE VERY BEST, of the festival, you are a lucky human. This weekend is Best of SIFF 2009 at SIFF Cinema. Here's the schedule:

7:00 pm - OSS 117: Lost in Rio

11:00 am - The Family Picture Show
1:30 pm - The Other Bank
4:00 pm - Rembrant's J'Accuse
6:30 pm - Shrink
9:30 pm - Black Dynamite

Sunday June 21
11:00 am - Best of SIFF 2009 Shorts
1:30 pm - The Cove
3:30 pm - Morris, A Live With Bells On
6:00 pm - Swimsuit Issue

And here's something that absolutely will not be playing: Hey, that's Don Knotts! The funnyman from TV!

I missed SIFF because I knew Will in Seattle would be there.

and, Fnarf, I saw those online pics of you dancing the polka at Folklife and hanging out at the country music stage - it's ok, your secret reason for skipping SIFF is safe with me.

Are those all the reasons you missed Siff?

No "Nurse.Fighter.Boy"? Easily one of the best films I've seen at SIFF in years.

I've never been to Folklife in my life, you half-cooked Wonder loaf.

Rembrant's J'Accuse is not just for people "into museums or art".

And what does Will have against Humpday?

@7 - nothing. It's just not for everyone.

Now, excuse me, I have to turn in this coupon for half-off on frames for the pic of Fnarf doing the Polka.

I would appreciate it if The Slog would stop trying to threaten traditional marriage with YouTube clips of female-on-fish action pawned off as a wholesome, patriotic fare. Where's NOM when we need it? Don Knotts was clearly advocating for the redefinition of a sacred, centuries-old institution to suit his perverted ichthyophilia.

also, I really liked talhotblond, but I can see many people either not liking it at all or just saying meh. Some will think it could have just been a 40 minute episode of Dateline.

if it's a documentary you want to see, I'd recommend Rembrant's J'Accuse (although it can be overwhelming) or The Cove.

I must admit that I secretly took a photo of Will in line at siff just because he's a rock star.

Will in Seattle 13
No, I was hanging out with film and rock stars.

There's a difference.

Will, french toast wouldn't hang out with you if it had a choice.

yet, Melba Toast appears to be a lot less picky...I've seen Melba and Will curled up in a back booth at Olive Garden looking very tres romantique...

re: birdy num num

I totally agree about the tepid selections. I did go to screenings, but I know that whatever titles are in the "best of the fest" are more like "the best that we can keep for an extra screening"
The festival is just bloated, poorly curated, even more poorly executed (how many dozen projection problems were there this year!), and package for us to praise without thought. Really the festival is just full of the hot air pouring out of the projection lamps.

@16 - that explains why paid attendance went up - again - this year at SIFF. During a recession ...

how many dozen projection problems were there this year

How many projection problems would you consider acceptable? There were hundreds and hundreds of screenings, so sure, you're gonna have problems. But do they get fixed? Is the problem identified? Is it even a projector problem? (I know at least Yes Men had problems due to the source media, not because of a faulty projector.)

If you want to be critical of them, focus on things like their poor use of social media, specifically their twitter feed. And the fact that they failed to get some "major" films that are on the fest circuit.
