"Ahmadinejad received only 12 percent of the vote, not 65 percent."

So says Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis (and director of the animated adaptation of the book) and other wonderful autobiographical comics about Iran. She testified about election fraud with another Iranian filmmaker at the European Parliament yesterday.

If you feel as though you don't know enough about Iran, I'd definitely suggest you read the collected Persepolis (or watch the movie, although the book goes further chronologically than the movie) and other works by Satrapi. They're so well-crafted, you probably won't realize you're learning about Iran while you read.

Persepolis was a great movie.

I think the true vote count lies somewhere between the two extremes.

I actually just read the book a month ago, having loved the movie when it came out. While I thought the book was excellent, something about the medium of animation really brought something to the story that was lacking in graphic novel form. It's on my very short list of movies I like better than the book.

Anyways, I can't help but think that I will be eating up the first-hand accounts of this revolution (... if that is what it is...?) when they are published, especially if they are as well-done as Persepolis.

I have to disagree. The follow up wasn't nearly as good as Persepolis.

If you have Netflix, you can stream the animated version of Persepolis off their site right now.

Just watched the movie the other night and I didn't really care for it. I liked the story overall and the style of it looked great (blu-ray ftw), but the American dub* and the animation were both stilted and choppy.

* For the record, I usually don't watch dubbed films when presented the option (even with animated films where the difference isn't as noticeable), but some fucking idiot decided it'd be a good idea to put white subtitles on a predominately black and white film. I watched it dubbed out of necessity.

Whoa. Megaman.

I learned everything I know about Iran from the movie Persepolis.

Persepolis was a fucking awesome film, and it did bring recent Iranian history to life in a way I hadn't seen before.

On a marginally related note, Persian women are smokin hot. Democracy in Iran, now!
