Today in Understated Gay-Friendly Advertising

Posted by David Schmader on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Over on Towleroad, Mr. T alerts readers to the new Orbitz commercial featuring a (fully licensed) Human Right Campaign logo.

Which reminded me of an email I received last late week from Slog tipper Ryan:

Just a few minutes ago my bf and I were watching TV and this commercial came on... I happened to notice a "GLSA" sticker on the hot blonde guy's surfboard... turns out it's the logo of the Gay and Lesbian Surf Association. It's very noticeable about 5 seconds in. Regardless of their sauces, props to Taco del Mar for the sneakily blatant promo of gay surfers.

The president may not give a fuck, but at least we matter to advertisers. Hurrah!

Did he say, "Schmorges BORG" ? I think so. So now Gay people should not resist because it's futile?

Um, I hate to be "Debbie Downer" but isn't the message of the ad that the fag is too fucking chicken-shit to go into the water? Just sayin'

@ 5 - I think you're reading too much to into it, since it's like the Kurt Russel/Dennis Miller lovechild dude is running into the water.

I think the real issue is that this is cost-free gay-friendly advertising, since the only people who are going to notice the logo and realize what it means are people already familiar with GLSA or people who see an alphabet soup starting with "GL..." and think gay. And there might be some committed homophobes who qualify, but I'd bet that most of the people are gay themselves.

Contrast that with a theoretical car ad where the couple shopping for a car are two guys or two girls or whatever.

Orbitz has one with a guy wearing an HRC shirt. Just noticed it tonight.
