Today in DVD Releases

Posted by on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 12:07 PM

There's not a lot going on today in DVD releases.

Two wildly different popular movies are being released on DVD today: The Michael Bay-produced remake of Friday the 13th, and Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail. On the YouTube comments to the Friday the 13th trailer, a commenter says "Why fuck over an already prefictioned movie?" I totally agree, and I think that comment can be applied to both Michael Bay and Tyler Perry.

Other movie releases include Suddenly, a thriller from 1954 starring Frank Sinatra as a man who wants to assassinate the president, a documentary called Scott Walker: 30 Century Man about the truly weird singer/songwriter, and the really confusing cartoon Garfield's Pet Force, in which Garfield becomes a superhero. How did this get greenlit? Did someone spell out the pitch in coke on a hooker's back? The mind boggles.

In television series releases, the first season of the Transformers cartoon is out on DVD today. I'm going to assume that watching this as an adult wouldn't be quite as disappointing and embarrassing as watching He-Man cartoons as an adult, but why bother testing that theory out? Three series I barely know anything about see their second season releases today: Everwood, Burn Notice, and Saving Grace. And that's about it.

You can find a full list of releases here.

I can't even see myself liking that Garfield straight-to-video 'product' if I were high as the moon. How did this happen? And since when is traditional animation just too damn hard to make?

Burn Notice is delightful fluff--a touch of MacGuyver, lots of pretty people in sunshine, and Bruce Campbell. I like it quite a bit.

You missed Mondo Vision's deluxe restoration of Andrzej Zulawski's "L'important C'est D'aimer" (featuring Klaus Kinski unhappily playing a homosexual), out today. Any/all Zulawski is essential viewing for humans.

Burn Notice is great. If you have Comcast, it's on the On Demand free service as well.

Sorry/au contraire, but 30 Century Man is an amazing film and a must-see for serious art/music fans. Walker's is a fascinating story, and the film is very well made and engaging. I caught this as a SIFF a couple years back, and am getting the DVD pronto.

Howdy T-Kins @9: I didn't mean "truly weird" as an insult; I'm looking forward to watching the documentary, and I really liked Scott 1 and 2.

@6: What is this "Blu-ray" of which you speak? Sounds like a laser of some sort.

@5: I will give it a look-see. Thank you.

Ciao PC @10: I didn't take "truly weird" as an insult to SW – he truly is! Just didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea about 30CM due to it's being included in the "not a lot going on in DVD releases" post. P.S. check out the LP "Tilt" for a Walker many, many shades darker than 1 and 2. :)
