Something You Can Do

Posted by Eli Sanders on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 4:54 PM

In our comments, and in comments on other blogs, a number of people have been asking what they can do from here in the U.S. to help the Iranian protesters. Here's a small, easy thing that's being requested by Iranians who are using Twitter to organize:

Help hide Iranian protesters: change your Twitter location to Tehran, time to +3:30 GMT.

The idea is to confuse the Iranian authorities. If every Twitter user in the world is suddenly based in Tehran, that means a lot more accounts for Iranian security operatives to comb through as they try to figure out who to track down and threaten—or worse. (And hey, if even old Birch can figure out how to switch his Twitter location, surely you can too.)

Up until this Twitter Revolution, I thought it was a stupid technology.

I went ahead and created an account in Tehran just now. Time to start inundating people with useless thoughts.

Will this twitter thing work with my Telex machine? What about my rotary phone?

I did it, and tweeted my 900 followers about it.

I've done that, but what I'd really like is a way I can donate blood to Iranian hospitals. I realize that's probably impossible, but I am O- and always feel really guilty if I don't give blood frequently and to places that really need it.

That was pretty easy. Thanks.

Just curious: wouldn't it also be good for the protesters to randomly set their locations to other places? If they all have "Tehran" listed, uh, seems like a red flag...

I've seen the list below on a couple of different sites. for all you tweet people, it's worth reading..

Rules when supporting the Iranian People on Twitter:
1. Change your name and location to Tehran. This will provide cover for the Tweeters in Tehran.
2. If you have proxy IP numbers to contribute, keep them private. DM them to @stopAhmadi or @iran09
3. Use only #iranelection or #gr88
4. Use your common sense to sniff a tweet for Iranian government misinformation - try and find corroboration before you retweet.
5. Never name a source. Simply relay the information from an Iranian source using F/Iran at the beginning.

It looks like Comcast bans using your connection to make proxy servers:

Under "Technical restrictions" :
"use or run dedicated, stand-alone equipment or servers from the Premises that provide network content or any other services to anyone outside of your Premises local area network (“Premises LAN”), also commonly referred to as public services or servers. Examples of prohibited equipment and servers include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and proxy services and servers"

http://www.comcast.net/terms/use/

anyone know how they track such things?

Get involved. Visit the following site with Amnesty International and sign the letter to be sent to Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei.

it seems like the timing of the tweets would make faked timezones obvious. maybe a service like tweetlater could help with posting phantom overnight updates?

Um, I'm new to the twitter thing so explain it to me. If we all change our locations to Tehran, won't it also be harder for us to find the real Iranian messages they are so desperate to export?

Ah yes, political activism in the age of social networking. Click, I'm done. Now let's see what's new on Gawker....

By the way, it's been established pretty well by now that Twitter isn't really doing much inside Iran. They're organizing by word of mouth and cell phone. Twitter is just how they get information out to us, to make us feel useful.
