There are many choices for you tonight.
At noon, Gillian Flynn reads from Dark Places (a thriller about Satanic sacrifice) at Seattle Mystery Book Shop. This kicks off a day of mystery events: Craig Johnson, the author of a mystery novel called The Dark Horse, reads today at Bellevue Regional Library, and Greg Rucka reads from his newest novel, Walking Dead, at Third Place Books.
Then there are literary fiction events all over, too. Carol Cassella, a local author, who is also a local anesthesiologist, reads from her novel Oxygen at the Ballard branch of the SPL. At the Central Library, Lisa See reads from Shanghai Girls, in which two sisters encounter war and other stuff. Elliott Bay Book Company hosts Robert Olmstead. A soldier fights to live in his "meditative novel" Far Bright Star.
Then there are poetry readings. Joshua Beckman reads from Take It, a collection of poems, at Third Place Books. And at the Hugo House, Karen Finneyfrock, who is awesome, reads with poets who are part of the "Wandering Uterus Reunion Tour."
And non-fiction readings! Town Hall hosts Bill Wasik, the author of the interesting-looking And Then There's This: How Stories Live and Die in Viral Culture. And the University Village Barnes and Noble hosts Andy Paige, the author of Style on a Shoestring.
And then two more! Matthew Simmons, who is an awesome local author, reads from his novella A Jello Horse at the College Inn Pub. The author will read and talk about pinball and probably play pinball. There is also beer. It should be fun.
And then Adrian Ryan, who is the author of Adrian Ryan's WAY TOO GAY Gay Seattle Survival Guide!, reads from his new book tonight at Travelers. This is obviously incredibly exciting. Plus, I don't know if Adrian Ryan has ever attended a reading in his life, and so it will be schadenfreude-y watching him trying to figure out what to do when he's onstage. He might just wind up singing and then weeping openly. Which could be entertaining in its own way. I think this is the reading of the night.
The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.
