Of Porn Stars and Pit Bulls

Posted by on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 1:12 PM

Ricky Sinz is a gay porn star. He's also the owner of a rescued pit bull. Earlier this month, he had to stab and stomp an attacking pit bull to death. Read the whole story on Sinz's visually SFW blog.

Meanwhile in Anacortes, some residents are making noise about a breed ban after a pit bull viciously attacked a donkey.

well, it seems the best defense against an enraged pit bull is...another pit bull. sort of a cold war style strategy i guess.

I was walking with my dog, a 7 year old pit bull/labrador mix, through Seward Park this morning. As a pit bull owner, I'm incredibly sensitive to the perception of other people and dog owners to my dog. Even though she has never attacked another dog and has never showed the slightest bit of aggression toward a human being I make sure to keep her on a short leash around other people and dogs.

We were coming out of some trails and passing through the open park area when two tiny dogs noticed mine and ran straight for us. I yelled at the owner that she should get her dogs, but she did not. Would it have been my fault if my dog had mauled those little dogs as they ran up to her without regard?

I bet I (and my dog) would have been vilified by Dan Savage and The Stranger for such an event even though I was the only dog owner obeying the law. Those cute little doggies vs. my big scary pit bull. Their owner acted unlawfully and irresponsibly and my dog would have been shot to death had she reacted aggressively toward those stupid little dogs for charging her like they did.

Knowing my dog, I knew there would be no incident, but the other owner did not. Not all leashed dogs are friendly to other dogs and it's stupid and irresponsible to allow your dogs to approach a strange dog without finding out first.

Whoops, sorry for the repost, which I'll leave up for the ongoing conversation and new donkey-related info.

Was the donkey also making porn?

Poor beast. It reads like the donkey was rather elderly--recovering from an attempted eviscerating is not the way to spend the golden years.

Carollani: Your story has the exact opposite effect that you intend. I don't hate pit bulls or care about "blaming" them like I would a human who did something wrong. I think even the pits that attack people are basically just being dogs. It's the consequences when a breed with jaws that powerful is "just being a dog" that concern me. I'm sure your dog is very nice. But your story just reinforces for me that even a well-cared-for pit with a responsible owner is still somewhat dangerous given the right circumstances.

@4, You are completely right, it wouldn't have been your fault, since your dog was restrained on a leash. However, all these stories involving pits attacking other animals/humans have a common theme. The pits were on the loose! I haven't heard any stories about labs mauling donkeys, or a band of rotties terrorizing a neighborhood. You cannot deny that this is a breed that has been bred to kill, to attack and not stop (e.g. all of the nasty attributes from English bulldogs).
I know a lot of great pits, but they are still animals bred to do what they do. German shepherds don't have jaws that can lock, nor do dobbies. And its true that labs bite the most kids every year in America, but thats all, a bite. They don't maul.

for fuck sakes.

Pit Bulls are NOT evil creatures. What is Pit Bulls now was the Rotties, the Doberman Pinschers, and German Shepherds, a scapegoat bad dog.

What happens is you feed these stories of vicious dogs, you get a bunch of asshole Gangstas who decide to snag these dogs so they can get street cred, decide not to take care of these animals, beat them, or neglect them - to make them more "Badass Dawgs".

Most Pit Bulls I've been around are very affectionate cowards - they think they're little dogs and try to climb into people's laps. One of them even gets completely owned by my Corgi/Chihuahua mix (and Chihuahuas are actually responsible for a large percentage of 'dog bites humans' incidents due to being naturally high-strung, and people thinking that itty bitty dogs don't need to be trained, but little dogs can transfer rabies all the same).

And being this is a rescued Pit Bull, I'm afraid in this case, it's one that probably never got properly socialized or tested for temperament before getting adopted :( unfortunately a good percentage of any rescue dogs (no matter the breed) are too broken by their hardships to ever have a chance to be rehabilitated.

"Would it have been my fault if my dog had mauled those little dogs as they ran up to her without regard? "

Partially, yes. It would've reflected badly on you for either training/socializing it improperly, and/or getting a poorly bred example. You have a responsibility for all of those options independent from leashless idiots.

I'm with 11 (sorry, Carollani). Most people don't own dogs that maul other dogs that come up to them. Sounds like you do, indeed, have a vicious dog on your hands there. I'd be concerned about that.

I really wish the owners of these dogs would be made to take responsibility for their animals. Letting *any* dog run lose is irresponsible.

@4,

I also have to agree with #11. Any dog that would maul two little dogs should not be allowed in public without a muzzle. What if those dogs were on a leash and merely dashed a few feet toward a dangerous dog? Being on a leash wouldn't save them from a mauling.

@7

A 1998 National Geographic study concluded that a pit bull's jaw strength is actually not as great as a Rottweilier's, A German Shepherd's or a Labrador's.

No dog has greater than 300 PSI jaw strength and a Pit bull's averages around 270-280 like most other med-large breed dogs.

I would NOT want to cross him.

Many of these comments reflect the fact that people jump all over themselves as soon as "pitbull" is mentioned. Yes, each dog owner is responsible for their own animal. But you'll notice that in the case of Carollani's comment, she and her dog were behaving correctly and she was more aware of the situation than the yorkie owner she's talking about. She was trying to make a point about that.

You know, a dog that is on leash may snarl, snap or even bite if two unleashed or uncontrolled dogs run up to it (because it's rude. Especially if they put their nose right in the leashed dog's butt). This is how they communicate with each other. Obviously I am not advocating a mauling here, but the unattended dogs could probably use the lesson in manners since their owners can't be bothered. But all a pitbull has to do is look at another creature the wrong way and it's a friggin' baby killer.

So? Carollani said she knew nothing would happen and in fact, nothing happened. Still, what was extrapolated was that she was walking an unmuzzled, "dangerous dog". That's some bullshit.
