HRC Pulls Out

Posted by Dan Savage on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 1:40 PM

The Human Rights Campaign has announced that it is pulling out of the DNC's gay fundraiser—as has former top Clinton aide Richard Socarides. And the editor of the Washington Blade, the capitol's gay newspaper, is planning to send a reporter to the event to "record guests as they enter the gay fundraiser."

Hello? Barney? Tammy? Jared?

At this rate, that's going to be one empty fundraiser.

Wow-- It's not often i'm so pleased with HRC's action. To those naysayers here who think the DOMA brief was no big deal-- when the conservative, work-from-the-inside, don't-rock-the-boat gay and lesbain advocacy group disses Obama like this---- well, what more proof do you need that the brief was a major slap in the face?

but how will the DNC's gay fundraiser conceive if everybody keeps pulling out?

Dan, it's Tammy, not Tammie.

So how many gay couples are showing up at every county courthouse in our state demanding politely their rights, or gay engaged couples showing up each and every day to get marriage certificates?

Actions speak much louder than words.

Bravo to HRC. And extra BRAVO for Washington Blade! I want to know who's still with the DNC after this fiasco.

Will, saying the same thing over and over again only makes people less likely to listen to you when you manage to say anything of value. I know it's rare that you do that, but I thought you would want to know.

Awesome. This could send a REAL message to the Obama administration. I hope Barney, Tammy, and Jared follow suit.

Awesome. I predict that at least one of the three will make an announcement before the end of the day. This is the way to make a difference. Very surprising that Obama has to learn the hard way that you don't fuck around with people's civil rights. Keep up the pressure.

Thanks, lily. It's easy to not send money to something you weren't going to anyway. I salute your bravery.

@11, that's true (about the money). And I apologize for my snark earlier.

But the thing is, many gay couples have gone to the court houses all over the country, and nothing good has come of it. So obviously trying the same thing over and over again when proven to be useless--or worse, detrimental to the cause as it turned out in our own state, with that separate but equal crap--is not a useful way to try to enact change. And when you repeat yourself like that, it's frustrating/annoying as shit and does neither you nor the cause any favors.

It's time for a new tactic.

Pay back the CIty of Seatle instead!

Then you can either go start working on a 3rd party candidate, thereby guaranteeing the GOP the White House in 2012. 8 years of Huckabee or Palin or whatever fucknut they run will be so much better than what we have now.
