Baldwin and Polis Release Statements on DOMA Brief

Posted by Dan Savage on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 6:16 PM

Neither openly-gay congressperson indicates any intention—yet—of pulling out of the DNC's big gay fundraiser next week. Rep. Tammy Baldwin's statement is short and supine:

Last week the Department of Justice filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of DOMA. I was profoundly disappointed by this action, particularly coming from this administration. I still take President Obama at his word that he is committed to the repeal of DOMA. I also recognize that he cannot do it alone. Congress has the responsibility on its shoulders to pass legislation that would give the opportunity to the President to keep his word and ensure that all married people, including those in same-sex marriages, enjoy the same rights under federal law.

Rep. Jared Polis's statement is long and furious—and he's pissed at Obama:

I was shocked and disappointed to learn that President Obama chose to defend DOMA in federal court, especially given his campaign promise to call for a full repeal of DOMA. My sadness turned to outrage when I read the Justice Department’s brief that not only defended this hurtful law but seemed to embrace it. Comparing my loving relationship with my partner, Marlon, to incest was unconscionable coming from a president who has called for change.

Since this filing, I have called on the President to issue a statement or give any sign that would clarify his position and am disappointed in his lack of reply.

I am a proud Democrat, as are many in the GLBT community, and I believe we must hold our leaders accountable. The Obama Administration made a HUGE mistake in the DOMA brief. If they keep making mistakes like this, they risk losing the support of the GLBT community forever, although I do not believe we are at that point yet.

President Obama needs to honor his promise to repeal this law and end its needlessly divisive and harmful impact on our nation. I again call on him to work with us in Congress to help pass legislation, ending this hateful and divisive law.

As the New York Times editorialized yesterday, “busy calendars and political expediency are no excuse for making one group of Americans wait any longer for equal rights.”

Barney?

This is the part where Dan takes all the credit for people pulling out because he posted to do so on his ~blog~

Yes. I DID IT!

Only they didn't pull out. But still! I DID IT!

When I spoke with Barney Frank's office, they said a statement would be forthcoming. This is the same response I received from Reps. Baldwin and Polis. At least Baldwin and Polis followed through. I still think they should pull out though.

Here's the sad thing about Gays In Seattle...you guys were all lured here from San Francisco with promises of hundreds of gorgeous men for the taking. In reality, all they wanted was for you guys to buy condos for $400,000. Now you are all stuck with depreciating assets, and you've had sex with the 100 or so A-list guys in the Puget Sound and quite frankly, there's nothing left. No wonder you're climbing the walls ranting about "DOMA" or whatever, there's nothing else for gay guys here to do except get drunk and watch straight people walking arm and arm outside the bar window.

I'd happily let you take credit, Dan.

Take the credit. When Polis, Baldwin and Frank figure out that they are assholes for not being stronger about an issue that matters to millions of people it will be because WE wouldn't let them get away with it pretending it's ok that they ignore us.

PUSH!

Dan Savage is the living epitome of someone who has got delusions of grandeur. No one outside of your little queer community cares about what you think. No one of any political relevance cares that you de-friended Obama. You're just a politically uneducated and legally ignorant dumb queer who should stick to the talk about butt plugs. Seriously, you obviously don't know anything about how governing ACTUALLY works (and no, 'editing' work by a bunch cocaine-addicted, wine-stealing, hipster-fucking losers does not count).

@8: very angry; very hilarious; very true

What exactly is Dan's claim on this one? These two people are still going to the event that he has been calling on them to boycott 10 times/day for (seemingly) the last week? These two are *so* royally pissed off that they are still going? Barney Frank is entertaining, but he is a political hack -- he'll be there.

If anyone is too busy right now its Frank - this banking crisis is his big priority at the moment. I know he's not afraid to speak him mind and I can imagine he's livid right now - although he's also older & wiser and probably waiting until he cools down before releasing an official statement.

Now as to the issue of these three pulling out of the fund raiser they run the risk of losing what they need to stay in power - $$. Frankly at a time like this wouldn't you want the opportunity to corner these guys at a small venue and tell them how you really feel? If anything I would drop my donation to 1k - a 'small' tip says a lot more about poor service than no tip at all.

The brief is an accident of omission not commission on Obama's part. It may turn out to be a 'happy accident' forcing Obama to throw the LGBT community a bone to get them to cool down a bit. We'll see...

For the life of me, I can't find anything in this where Mr. Savage is taking credit for anything (except for above when he announced "yes. I did it.")
Also, not for nothing- but taking credit for what? I do all my credit stealing when there is something to steal.

I can't wait to hear what Barney Frank says. I really hope (and expect) it will be more intelligent than all the bitchy little princesses posting to this blog.

@8 @9 - I care about these posts, and no, I'm really nothing at all like Dan. These are large issues that touch everyone in society. It is ridiculous to suggest Dan should not speak about this issue. Obama promised his supporters something and Dan is one of those people he made a promise to.

You don't understand how frustrating it is to have your rights shuffled down to the bottom of the stack by politicians and the mainstream media. The only reason there was an uproar over the DOMA brief is because of the bloggers out there talking about it. The mainstream media didn't even think it was as important as discussing naked photos of Dustin Lace Black.

Dan rants about all kinds of BS I don't care about, but I don't feel it necessary to reply to him about how he shouldn't post it on his blog. It's his friggin' blog. You can scroll down to a post about soccer, or a scenic photo, or whatever crap Jen Graves thinks is art. No one is urging you to join this conversation to decry Dan when the issue isn't friggin' about Dan. It's about his rights, it's about my rights, it's about a hell of a lot of other people's rights.

I would hope you could see past the Dan, and see the real issues here.

I helped get Jared Polis elected in my ditrict. His press release is not near good enough. I will Boo him at Colorado Pride this year and I'll be witholding my vote if he attends the fundraiser. I am mad as hell and my memory is long.

@13 No one is advocating that Dan stop speaking his mind about gay rights. In fact most of us can agree on the end goal in mind (marriage equality) but disagree about the means Dan irresponsibly and often thoughtlessly posts about. Moreover, he speaks authoritatively about subjects that he knows NOTHING about: namely the fucking LAW. He doesn't have the slightest idea about how the legal process in this country works. He actually goes out of his way to repeat false statements about legal briefs, issues, and positions. That's where my beef is with him. He's not helping the movement. He looks like he always has: A self-righteous moron who speaks completely and totally out of his ass, and only to hear himself speak. He is nothing more than a gay Palin. Fuck him. We'll do this shit with qualified, educated, focused, and non-dramatic sky is falling drama queens.

I'm disappointed in Barney for staying quiet thusfar, he's my favorite. The way he breathes (or heaves might be more appropriate) it sounds like he's going to die of a massive coronary any second, but I think that just endears him to me. xoxo Barney, now stand up (if you can) and say something!
