Virtually Homeless

Posted by Paul Constant on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 1:39 PM

42dc/1245094824-homelesssim.pngThis blogger has created a homeless father and daughter in the Sims 3 and is now trying to survive on the kindness of strangers:

This is an experiment in playing a homeless family in The Sims 3. I created two Sims, moved them in to a place made to look like an abandoned park, removed all of their remaining money, and then attempted to help them survive without taking any job promotions or easy cash routes. It’s based on the old ‘poverty challenge’ idea from The Sims 2, but it turned out to be a lot more interesting with The Sims 3’s living neighborhood features.

Much more, including the dad calling a stranger a llama and then trying to kiss him, here.

"attempted to help them survive without taking any job promotions"

Just like most of the bums in Seattle!

It's really a very poignant blog, and she has links for donating to charities.

Surely I can't be the only one thinking, a 13-year-old girl, on the streets, sneaking into people's houses (and beds), is going to get raped or molested any minute now. Can you do that in the Sims? What if Zebadiah or whatever his name is tries to put his hands on her?

Urgutha Forka 6
@5,
They can't get raped, but they could be WooHoo'ed against their will, I suppose.

Urgutha is correct. My main Sims 3 sim, Red Hamster, left the mean streets of Urbopolis to get out of the panhandling and playing music for spare change and she's quite happy with her own house and has even formed her own band on her way to becoming DJ Red Hamster as an electronica superstar.

Rugrats come next - I haven't told her they're going to rebel and become corporate drones, just to piss her off.

@8, Can you send in "acts of God" to just simply smite those you don't like? (Sorry, it's been years since I played Sims)

@8 - nah, that gets boring pretty quick. More fun to have them scrounge on the fish they can catch at the beach and the food that falls from the trees there, while squatting on an empty beach parcel nearby.

I see that the last demographic of scam artists have finally made their way to the internet.

This blog is actually really touching, strangely enough. Bringing the issue of homelessness to those who no longer venture outside and walk in parks, but rather just surf the Internet all day.

Alice pulled a really fascinating stunt today (Bloomsday). I wonder if anything unexpected will come of it. Like in Dickens.
