How to Be a Human Being

Posted by Brendan Kiley on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 1:00 AM

Charles's featured photo from the Iranian demonstrations is sexy and all, but this is my favorite—a demonstrator trying to hustle a cop to safety and first aid, even while the government security forces are (allegedly) denying hospital access to severely wounded demonstrators:

The photo comes from the intrepid folks at the BBC. (And while I love the blog coverage, let's remember the flesh-and-blood writers and photographers who are risking their muscles and bones—their structural integrity—to tell us what's happening.)

Runner up—a photo of this door in a Iranian dorm room (modifications courtesy of police trying to intimidate the kids out of demonstrating today):

The protests are too local in nature to have a nationwide impact in Iran.

Even if the election was - obviously - stolen by the extremist al-Qaeda-hating Supreme Leader Khomeini.

That said, doesn't mean we should do Israel's dirty work in bombing Iran for things that Israel also does.

You know, part of me can't help but think how ironic it is that, in a way, Bush really did bring democracy to the middle east. By being such a piss-poor diplomat and corporate sell out warmonger it was almost inevitable that we would elect somebody like Obama after the last 8 years. The entire world witnessed our last election, even those in oppressive dictatorships, they saw the power of democracy first hand, saw how it affected us and how it affected them. It's possible that in a way our last election did more to spread democracy than anything that Bush ever did. But would anyone have really noticed if he had at least been halfway competent?

Perhaps Iran and Lebanon are only the first dominos in this process.

@1 - Demonstrations are going on in many cities, it's not just Tehran.

I'm with you, Brendan. I also liked the video posted at HuffPo that showed protesters helping another -- dazed, injured, not obviously grateful -- policeman out of a hostile crowd and onto someone's front porch. This after said policemen and his fellows charged their motorbikes right into the middle of a peaceful protest.

@1: if you don't know what you're saying, don't say it. first, don't drag all iranians in with the jew hating. we're really not that bad. second, it's khamenei, not khomeini, who was the first ayatollah after the revolution. finally, there are protests everywhere, not just in tehran. certainly the ones in tehran are getting the most press because they are the largest (it is the biggest city after all), but protests are happening even in villages.

and to everyone else, if you want to help, a good thing to do right now is crashing right wing/governmental/hard line religious websites in iran. there is a website set up to reload multiple websites to hog bandwidth and force a crash. the website is http://dev.austinheap.com/iran/

@6 - Meet Will in Seattle. He's rather gifted in the art of saying something without knowing what he's talking about.

The latest I've heard is that the Guardian Council is going to look into "allegations of voter fraud". That's progress, I suppose... and I think 2 might be onto something. Ahmadinejad obviously miscalculated how close he's have to make it look to appear legitimate.

Congratulations, Will - you've graduated to full-blown troll status. Ecce Homo would be proud of you.

Why don't you just shut the fuck up? We're all tired of you.

Wow, you mean they're risking their flesh-and-blood AND their muscles and bones and the ne plus ultra, their structural integrity?

Wow. You know, there's nothing like making a point three times, saying it once, then repeating it twice -- tripling down -- to make your point.

And going from the cliche flesh and blood to the abstraction of "structural integrity"!

Well thanks for draining the emotions and the visual content and putting it in terms engineers can grok.

Their structural integrity is at risk, you mean like when a wing experiences a fatigue event in mid flight? Ahhh, now we get it!

Btw you should be aware that if that happened the event could be a predicpitating event pf numerous sequalae and so an intervention by appropriate certified health care professionals should be considered.

@ Brendan, don't get me wrong, I'm as gay as the next guy in Seattle, but to refer to these pictures as 'sexy' is just absurd. This is not a beauty contest. This is as real as it gets. And I know you're not viewing it as anything other, but I think many people would prefer if it comments such as the one you made were curbed at this time. I'm just saying...

I do agree, though, that these are some pretty overwhelming photos depicting enormous human strength and will.
