The Twitter Revolution

Posted by on Sun, Jun 14, 2009 at 7:14 AM

For great coverage of the first important post-Bush event in the Islamic world, go here and here:
iranian_protest_election_results_25.jpg Do not for a second separate the demonstrations from the removal of Republicans from American political power. The fact that America could change created the space for change here. If Obama were not the president then there would have been no need to fabricate a landslide for Ahmadinejad. A realistic little win would have done just fine.

No matter what the outcome, Ahmadinejad now has a permanent legitimacy problem. The demonstrations are working. They're making it much harder for those on the right in America and Israel to demonize Iran as a whole. To Obama's advantage, the situation there is now far more complicated. 1979 finds its strange mirror in 2009.

Is there an Islamic world? (And does it follow that our view from Christendom?) Because your way of describing events in Iran contributes towards explaining why Americans are so easily sold on wars against seemingly indistinguishable enemies.

I hate to be so idiotic with such an important news story, but that picture? Yum.

The struggle for Iran's future, and by extension the future of the Middle East hangs in the balance, and all that, yet I can't help but comment on how, damn, that guy sure has a great body. Impressive delts and triceps, especially. Gay civil liberties can't come fast enough there, as far as I am concerned.

What does it mean when real revolutions mimic Calvin Klein ads?

I love his jeans.

Yeah, that Ahmadinejad is a royal fool. It won't be too long before he gets his turn at being American Enemy # 1 (Kim Jung Il is the title holder presently). He is basically becoming another Sadaam.

That is an excellent photo. And @4 is right... it could easily be an ad.

@6:

Considering that logo poking up out of the top of his jeans, I'm guessing if it isn't already, it WILL be very soon.

Ahmadinejad, or any other Iranian president, doesn't hold any real power. The Ayatollah does, and he's not elected, he's chosen by a small group.

Iranian presidential elections might as well be compared to beauty pageant elections.

Airship iPods by the millions with the new Blackeyed Peas album.

Give 'em a taste of what they've been missing for 30 years.

That will bring a turnover quicker than anything...

God, you have no clue how politics works in Iran, do you?

Let's just remember that the mess in Iran is our own making from the 1950's when we overthrew Iran's legitimately elected government and installed the Shaw.

Just remember that successful revolutions have to come from within the nation in question. And once the people of Iran get a government that they truely want the US needs to support that choice even if that goverment is not our idea of ideal.

Good luck Iran, you should be okay as long as the United States doen't try to "save you" for Corporate Democracy/Facism.

Charles,
I totally disagree. This has nothing to do with Bush. I saw the videos of the riots. The first thing I noticed is that many in the sexually integrated crowd were young unshaven men clad in T-shirts and blue jeans. In addition, many young women were wearing head scarves but very few if any in full chador. It indicated to me (& surprised me) that Iran actually has come a long way since 1979. I also know that they have a free press. This outburst vaguely reminds me of Tiananmen Square. People are reacting against a greatly flawed system/vote. Iran, like China DOES want change. Many simply didn't expect this electoral outcome hence the demonstrations. It isn't a rebuke of Bush or an endorsement of Obama. Many Iranians simply want change.

Charles,
I made two errors in post #16. I meant "shaved" men not "unshaven". That is, I viewed very few men in traditional Islamic attire and sporting facial hair. And, I should have used past tense in the 2nd sentence, ("was" vs "is"). My bad.

WOW. what a litany of shallow, effete comments. thanks, indie observers!

while you sip your chai this sunday morning - students, women, everyday people are getting the shit beat out of them in Tehran, shot at... finally! taking to the streets, in the biggest story to come out of Iran since 1979 - a real, honest chance to topple the whole goddam misogynist, totalitarian, anti-democratic clusterfuck in one of those rare, no-one-saw-it-coming-really opportunities that appears once in a generation.

FUCK YOU. and fucking MSNBC, CNN, Fox and the other pathetic stateside networks who don't give a good goddam either, apparently... at least not enough to take time away from their weekend to get on the air and help breathe life to the electricity on the streets. andrew fucking sullivan (check out his blog, he's KILLING the MSM single-handedly on this story!) and a few others actually give a shit and come off like heroes compared to ALL of you snarky, fat-free, jaded types.

@1 for the non-Western viewpoint win. Wahhabis are not sane. And the whole Shiite vs Sunni debate is a frickin waste of time.

That said, I was hoping this would be about the Golden Space Needle win for Black Lighting.

BLACK IS BACK. DEAL WITH IT, SUCKA!
