In Soviet Russia, Games Play You

Posted by Sam Machkovech on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 1:41 PM

...but in Nintendo's world, video games will soon play themselves.

Beginning with the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii (due this holiday season), players will be able to pause a game during a particularly difficult level and let the game take over to complete the level. Press a button at any time to resume playing. This will help reduce barriers of entry for new or younger players — without purchasing a strategy guide or resorting to cheat codes.

Unavailable for comment: The dork at Gamestop who always asks if I want to pre-order a bunch of strategy guides.

I welcome the feature. I wouldn't use it most of the time, but take for instance some of the later purple coin levels on the current Mario Galaxy. I've thrown down my controller in disgust so many times over those levels. If right before I get disgusted I can watch the level be finished? I would be ok with that.

And who buys strategy guides anymore? Since gamefaqs.com has been around I haven't looked at a single print guide.

Hell, I even go to gamefaqs for basic instructions instead of opening the manual that came with the game!

Awesome. Don't like it, don't use it.

Please have compassion for the humble Gamestop employee who must parrot the weasel phrases from corporate HQ in order to keep their job. They don't want to ask you if you want the strategy guide any more than you want to hear it.

I think this is great for newer players.

It also might give Nintendo an excuse to put in more difficult levels for us more experienced players.

It also heightens the potential for games to be an effective dramatic medium for those without the technical ability to jump through the hoops.

If WoW would level me while I was logged out, I would like it a lot more.

Now would be an appropriate moment to ask: where did the "In Soviet Russia, [noun] [transitive verb]s you!" joke originate? Was it a Yakoff Smirnoff line?

That is awesome. Cause there are always those stupid parts of games that take way to fucking long to accomplish. I'm looking at you "Wall Kicks" level in Mario 64.

Not only that, but Wii Fit is being used in treatments for Parkinsons.

If WoW would allow me to play mini-games where I got exp points for planting gardens in game, it would be a lot more fun.

On the one hand, I think it takes away from the sense of accomplishment you get when you finally master a really tricky part of the game. On the other hand, I have way, way too many games that I've just put aside because I got stuck at a part that was so hard it made me want to put a fist through the screen.

Well if Xbox ever pulls this faggotry, they better lock the achievements. Even better, do it 5, 10, or 20 times, and you get -25, -50, -250 achievements with insults in their description.

Fucking n00b shit. Leave it to Nintendo to dumb the fucking industry up.

Yeah, I'm not going to lie, I'd love this. Especially for certain boss levels in certain games, which suck and are frustrating and I'll put games aside for months/forever because I can't get past them and play something I actually enjoy.
