Two New Things

Posted by on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 11:12 AM

1. The inaugural Blitz—a second-Thursday Capitol Hill art walk organized by Ellen Forney—is tonight. Says Ellen:

Today is Blitz, the much-anticipated Capitol Hill Arts Walk! It will be sunny, it will be artsy, it will be a great party. There are more than 40 participating businesses including Babeland, Electric Tea Garden, and Ballard-Fetherston, a parade, street performers, an after-party, and lots of cute and sexy people. It's 5pm - 8pm, and you can see a full list of businesses, online map, downloadable map, links and photos at www.blitzcapitolhill.com.

2. The third arbitrary art grant has been announced.

Remember, this is an international art grant, so all Slog readers can play along. Make a video of yourself dancing like you're being shot at, post it to YouTube by July 10, and you might win $500. Also remember: This art grant is not about quality. It's about chance operations (and accumulation). So your video doesn't have to be good—it just has to be.

Yes we know any modern art doesn't have to be "good," it just has to be accompanied by impenetrable prose. The notion of "good" is philistine, etc. etc. yawn, yawn.

Methinks the Blitz website needs a copy editor...

Ellen Forney IS great and she has revitalized the Art Walk but credit must be paid to the fabulous Audrey McManus (from Babeland) who has been tirelessly working on making Capitol Hill Artwalk a viable event for the last couple years, as well as the handful of other faithful supporters and volunteers who've been steadily regrowing the event.

Organizing counterprogramming to the official Slog meetup and then advertising it on Slog is unfortunate.

Ordinarily I would be excited about a Capitol Hill art walk partly organized by Ellen Forney, but I have already committed to socializing, drinking beer, and playing skeeball in Ballard at the time this thing is to be happening.

I am disappointed in the subject of the dance grant. Being shot at seems negative and uncreative. How about a spontaneous musical dance performance instead or naked dancing in public.

@ 4 They're not mutually exclusive...

Brendan, how many people do you think are going to go to Ballard at 6pm, drink for an hour, and then head to Capitol Hill for the last hour (likely closer to half an hour or 45 minutes) of the art walk? Or the inverse, start the art walk at 5pm, do that for an hour, and head up to Ballard? They're not technically mutually exclusive, but the timing is pretty damn awkward, especially if you don't drive.

@6: Considering how Goddamn hard it is for you people to get off the hill, they might as well be.
