Timothy Egan on Amanda Knox.

The case against Knox has so many holes in it, and is so tied to the career of a powerful Italian prosecutor who is under indictment for professional misconduct, that any fair-minded jury would have thrown it out months ago... But this is not about whose system is better. This is about a high-spirited British student, Meredith Kercher, found strangled and stabbed in November of 2007 in the Perugian cottage she shared with Amanda Knox. Justice must be done. And in fact, a man has already been convicted of her murder....

Read the whole thing.

Good Morning Dan,
Yeah, I read that last night as well. Sheds an important new light on the Amanda Knox case. I thought it very fair. I think she deserves better treatment especially from the British and Italian press.

WHERE is Mr. Mudede? Savage, Timothy Egan is being ridiculous. How can you post without comment?

yeah, i've been asking these questions all along. and there's plenty of Slog commenters ready to send her to jail because "she has crazy eyes".

there is no plausable motive for her to kill her roommate. hash doesn't make you a psychopath. neither does making contradictory statements in a language that's not native while scared out of your wits.

the italians are a joke, and she's fucked. the jury is taking the summer off to render the verdict in the fall?

if by some miracle (the intervention of SATAN?)she's cleared, we should throw her a tickertape parade.

But where's the foxy photo? You need to have Mudede show you how to do an Amanda Knox story.

But I guess it wouldn't involve butt-fucking, so that's out.

From the people I know that knew her before this whole debacle, she's nuts. I don't know if she's murder nuts, but she sure is "Fake a break in to your house with guns to scare you because it's funny" kind of nuts.

Yeah, and after you read the whole article, please read the first comment below by someone who is actually informed about the case.

This piece was pure PROPAGANDA. Unbelievable it was published and in the NY Times. If this pretty little psychopath gets off, I'm gonna be FUCKING PISSED.

Murdering psychopaths come in all shapes and sizes, people. Fucking look past the doe-eyed wholesome face, will you???

I still want to know why she lied (in a murder trial) about her vibrator.

@5, "nuts" isn't evidence in a murder trial. @7, "murderers come in all shapes and sizes" isn't evidence in a murder trial. Of course she COULD have done it; the question is, can they prove in court that she DID do it? The answer is, obviously, "no". Whether she's guilty or not -- and honestly I haven't got the faintest idea, and neither do any of you -- the question is, can they prove it? But they have NOTHING, not one tiny little scrap of anything besides this absurd "satanist" fantasy. The prosecutor would have been forced out of office in any country but Italy a decade ago. He's completely and utterly full of shit. But then, Italians aren't interested in truth.

@6: there's nothing in that comment that hasn't been posted on slog 8 brazillion times. i'm as "fully informed" as that commenter. so's mudede.

1 plausable explanation for their "mopping up" kirchers blood: they were fucking freaked out and weren't acting rationally. they PANICKED.

again, WHAT IS THEIR MOTIVE? i expect that italians might buy the "satanist sex game gone wrong" theory, but the british? i expect better.

and the "if this was a black american girl we wouldn't care" argument is irrelevant.

I read this and he makes some good point to raise doubt, but can't she and her boyfriend explain WHAT THEY WERE DOING THE NIGHT OF THE MURDER? Egan gives this the slightest mention. Also, she fingered someone else WHO DID HAVE AN ALIBI. I agree that there is doubt and the prosecutor is nuts, but there is still something wrong about her involvement.

@10, again: "something wrong", "something fishy" is not evidence of guilt.

If this girl were ugly, from a poor family -- otherwise outwardly UNappealing to people, everyone would say she were guilty without thinking twice.

Just like when Chris Rock talks about O.J. Simpson: If O.J. wasn't famous and was just a bus driver, he'd simply be "Orenthal, the bus-driving murderer." People didn't want O.J. to be a wife-killer because he was a nice-looking, famous guy everybody knew and liked from T.V. People similarly don't want the pretty, wholesome-looking white girl from down the street to be a murderer either. Too scary for people to accept people like that are capable of such things. But they ARE. And when they're caught they ride on their surface appearances to get off. And the worst part is, it often WORKS.

If she is guilty, the Italian court has done a damned good job of making her look innocent.

@12: OJ was guilty as sin, and it was blindingly obvious to everyone but the credulous cretins on the jury. he only walked BECAUSE he was famous AND he was black. phil spector didn't walk.

the same is not true of Amanda Knox. if she WAS a murderer, there would be a simpler explanation for her involvement in this crime. maybe she HAS given the polizei an alibi at this point, but if it's buried inside false confessions & ill-advised finger-pointing & accusations of satanist vibrator use, who's listening?

@13, exactly. Regardless of her guilt or innocence, the trial has been a travesty.

Oh thank god! Sanity! I started following the case when Mudede starting blogging about if. She is so obviously innocent that I actually got upset over it.

Please place this knee jerk next to yr other War-in-Iraq item, Mr Savage.
This article is hyberpole-riddled and shows a clear bias, which has no bearing on the defendant's guilt, but why the link?
And "a drifter"? What the fuck does that means? They nicely avoided mentioning his ethnic background, that might've given the game away...
A rare slip in yr usually quality linkage.
