The Morning News

Posted by Dominic Holden on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 7:58 AM

Done Deal: After Supreme Court declines to hear case, Fiat acquires Chrysler.

Chrysler was openly acknowledged as a test case for General Motors, a far larger and more complex company only in the early stages of its bankruptcy case.

As envisioned by Chrysler, Fiat and the government, Wednesday’s sale will create a new carmaker freed from old Chrysler’s crushing labor costs and debt levels. It will have gained in Fiat, which will run the company, a partner skilled in making and selling small, fuel-efficient cars around the world.

Nuclear Options: UN drafts sanctions against North Korea that would restrict money transfers, cut loans, and intercept cargo ships. Officials expect to pass the resolution—pissing off North Korea—later this week.

Those Poor Insurance Companies: Air France crash may be the most costly air disaster yet, insurers whine, at more than $150,000 per victim.

The Abyss: France dispatches nuclear sub to search for the black box on the sea floor. Crews have found 41 bodies so far.

Companies Having a Row: Apple disses on AT&T at tech convention, increasing speculation that Verizon will pick up the iPhone by next year.

Chaps Having a Spat: Politics are weird in the UK.

You're Hired, Soldier: City council considers a bill to provide anti-discrimination protections to veterans seeking jobs and housing.

Hate Mongers: Garfield High School student organizes counterportest to Westboro picketing.

Fishmongers: PETA is outraged about fish-tossing in the Pike Place Market. Because they're fish, you see, not toys.

Little Shits: Group of teenage boys beat transgender woman in the Rainier Valley. Police have arrested one of the alleged attackers and are investigating the case as a hate crime.

Good to see PETA out there on the front lines, protecting dead animals from being tossed around.

Smart getaway—the youth who beat up the trans woman "fled on a Metro bus."

I like how the reporter handles the pronoun game, subtly pointing out the officer's mistake:
The victim, in her 30s, told police "that as soon as the suspects got to him, they started hitting and kicking him at the same time one of the (suspects) was attempting to take his backpack," according to a police report.

The victim held onto her backpack and briefly got away. But she told police they charged again, knocking her to the ground. She said she heard a homophobic term said when she was being beaten, and one of the boys stated they were going to kill her.

"He also stated that he sometimes wears a skirt and he stated that he believes he was attacked because of this," according to the heavily redacted report.

No Virginia Democratic Primary results?

Nothing about the most conservative of the three candidates; Mr "Marriage is between a Man and a Woman"; winning in a landslide?

Nothing about Democratic voters already turning their back on Obama
and
repudiating homosexual marriage?

Really?

Fish? I thought PETA wanted us to call them "sea kittens."

Slog may have missed Democratic voters' rejection of gay marriage but Obama will not.

@4: PETA has the memory of a Goldseakitten.

@2: I agree that the reporter handled the pronouns (and the cop's gaffe) well.

@Dom: Isn't calling the attackers 'little shits' a bit too mild? Considering their ages (mid-teens) that they would physically attack an adult twice their age (30s), indicates that there is something more serious a work here. I do agree that this attack should be treated as a hate crime.

The GodHatesFags people are protesting Garfield because... why? Apparently to warn the students that Obama is going to kill and eat their babies.

"That way when Obama destroys their foundations and establishes his new laws and policies (including killing and eating your babies) they will blaspheme God and have no excuse."

Oh, wait, I'm sorry. So that when the end times come ALL OF THE STUDENTS CAN BE DAMNED WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE. Good to know!

PETA doesn't have to worry about being marginalized by the political power structure---they're self-marginalizing.

@12 - You're missing 8's racist point. He's not saying that the beating was justified because transgendered person allegedly solicited sex. He's just saying blacks are violent and we've created a culture that protects that behavior. I think.

Can the douchebags at PETA do anything right? Anything that might actually help their cause?

Dominic,
Yeah, I read that piece regarding PETA's protest at the Flying Fish at Pike Place Market in this morning's paper and howled out with contemptable laughter. PETA is losing more credibility. This is simply ridiculous. These fish are caught legitimately and sold. The Market's personnel merely has a sense of humor about it. PETA's outrage is absolutely counterproductive. PETA's shock tactics are officially getting old.

@12 Have you been to the valley lately?

I think both sides are full of shit. "Grabs" happen everyday on joe metro- especially by a set of teens from the valley. I know this because it has happened twice on my bus. They target people no one cares about- especially drunks half- passed-out. The new victim fit their stereo-type- "no one will believe you".

They need to be fully prosecuted. Everyone should have the right to ride public transit without fear. A hate crime? Why steal a tg's bag over anyone else's? Was it because they thought we wouldn't care?

Trying to steal someone's shit does not qualify as hate against transgenders- even if an epithet is shouted.

Both groups identify themselves as victims. Only one had scars to prove it.

Why are the families of plane crash victims entitled to so much money? I mean, yeah it sucks to have a family member die in such a tragic way, but don't you accept some sort of risk when you get on a plane?

@18,

Companies bear liability when people are injured or killed under their watch, even if it's something somewhat dangerous like flying. Even car accident victims get insurance payouts and driving is much, much more dangerous. $150k per victim is a steal.

@15,

I can't help but wonder if PETA is secretly funded by the beef, pork, and poultry industries. What better way to promote your products and delegitimize any and all people concerned about animal welfare?

@11: so if each petition has the entire 114-page contents of the bill in question, could domestic partnership supporters just make it a point to read the entire thing when approached to sign the petition?

I'm imagining getting a dozen people or so going out and finding signature gatherers, and having someone reading each petition they have available. Then, after reading the entire thing, declining to sign the petition.
