I'm Going to Hell? You're Going to Jail!

dc69/1244654067-0273_01.gifGreat new comic book gossip site Bleeding Cool brings news that in Singapore, a couple has been sentenced to six weeks in prison for distributing Jack Chick tracts, those small Christian comics that you get for free on the street. According to the site, the couple was mailing the tracts to people, and police seized hundreds of the comics when they raided their base of operations.

Chick tracts are pretty famously intolerant. Everyone from Catholics to Mormons to Jews to unbaptized children all enjoy their sinning lives until they invariably go to hell in the end of the comics. All this goes to remind me of David Schmader's great review of Doom Town, which is probably one of the best Chick tracts ever. You can find that review over here.

Got this tract on my car while attending classes at UC San Marcos in San Diego. I can only assume it was for the rainbow sticker on my car. I reported it as harrassment.

Obnoxious as Chick tracts are, we do agree that this is a terrible abuse of their civil rights, and we all should oppose it, right? Just making sure.

@3, I'll stand up for them when they stand up for me.

@3: Civil rights? Singapore? Please, do some research.

@5: You're missing my point, I think. People shouldn't be imprisoned for expressing their beliefs, period. Just because it's common in many places in the world, including Singapore, doesn't make it right. You still have rights, even if the local government refuses to recognize them.

The best Chick Tract is still the anti-Dungeons & Dragons comic.

Yes Kim, I agree with you, but I'm still going to chuckle about this.

Yes, the D&D one is truly awesome.
My favorite line is "I can't. I'm fighting the Zombie." I think "fighting the Zombie" would make a really great euphemism for something, but I haven't thought of a really good one yet. Any suggestions?

Got Doom Town one morning after leaving my truck window cracked last summer here in Laramie, Wyo. Always goes over well at parties.

Chick tracts are bible belt Christianity's greatest contribution to a better world.

They might be B.B. Christy's ONLY contribution to a better world.
