I think the only ones who needed convincing were those bizarre fangirls. This goes into the non-news category.

A snake AND a butterfly on his crotch? Full points for subtlety, Rolling Stone.

But yes, I fucking adore him, so I don't even care. Just glad that now that the show's over he can finally be open (not that anyone DIDN'T know) and move on.

OK, I give up...who the hell is Adam Lambert? (No, I DON'T care enough to look it up for myself, thank you.)

It's nice to live in a world where young people feel they came come out publicly, but still... Stayed mum while he was trying to win a contest, but kept it on deck until he needed back in the headlines. That how it works now?

"can come out", it should read.

uh, yeah. if you can use it, use it. fame's fame. even if it's based on indulging an old idea that something's shameful and can hurt you despite no evidence proving such. no news is bad news, if you're the subject. all that famewhore rot.

Kind of a lame cover though. The ugly shirt, the fake snake and the eye makeup -- totally expected. I would have loved to have seen him clean-cut in a tight Mormon Elder suit for this cover.

His most famous performance was a Tears for Fears cover... I'd be shocked to find anyone who didn't know he's gay.

How is it that this kid is.. well, a kid, but manages to look like a pudgy, leathery troll?

Aside from his hit-with-a-stick looks and OK music abilities, should anyone like this guy? He did, after all, keep himself closeted in hopes of winning the ever-so-trivial game of Shoots and Ladders that is American Idol.

So I say:

Did you hear? Douche.

Speaking of trolls..

He's 26. Hardly a kid. And he's "leathery" because he has pockmarks. Are we making fun of acne now? He didn't keep himself closeted, either. Maybe the show did (not really), but that makes him a douche?

You're the douche.

Shelby 26
He's actually 27. And he's leathery because either he's applied too much tanner or purposely sat in the sun for too long. If I meant "pock-faced," that's what I would've said.

And unless you're writing his biography and know that he signed away his life during the filming of AI, then you have as little basis as I do to declare he was forced to remain closeted. Either way, is hiding your identity really something to be applauded? Especially for, as I said earlier, a TV competition?

Do I think that makes him douchey? Yes. Am I repulsed by his eyeliner, orangish-brown skin and makings of a frontbutt? Yes, that too.

The winner of Canadian Idol last year, Theo Tams, is gay. He won because he had talent, and nobody cared about his sexuality, much less to have it splashed all over the cover of a magazine.

Adam is under contract to 19Entertainment. With dropping ratings of AI, not to mention the number of previous past winners/contestants who have tanked this seems to be like a very well thought out, and contrived announcement that has likely been part of the marketing plan for Adam from day one.

I'm intrigued at your ability to discern skin texture over television.

What did you think I claimed? That the show closeted him? What I meant was, "If anyone closeted him, it would have been the show, but they didn't appear to have." That his boyfriend at the time, if he had one, didn't want to be paraded around on TV isn't proof of anything.
Posted by w7ngman http://userscripts.org/users/89370 on June 9, 2009 at 3:43 PM
Greg 30
I don't think the show or anyone closeted him. I figured that nobody talked about him being gay because it wasn't important to his performance on the show. Besides, look at him. He's gay. Duh. Would anyone really not be able to figure that out without a map?

Okay, I only saw two episodes with my mom, she loves the show, but there was an attactive young man in the audience sitting with his family both times, that looked a heck of a lot like the man he was photographed kissing. I presumed, and I know I shouldn't, that he was the boyfriend.

Drew in Palm Springs 32
I think he handled himself pretty well, all things considered.

I didn't follow the whole deal very closely, but as far as I know he didn't ever deny he was gay, he didn't contrive some beard-y romance, he didn't get all hot and testy when the question came up, he didn't back away from homoeroticism in his performances.

Much like a job interview, AI is a highly artificial, and probably highly stressful, situation. Now that it's over and the dust has settled, with winning and losing no longer on the line, he gave a direct answer to a direct question.

Those performances of his I saw on YouTube were pretty cool, although I don't know that I'll be rushing out to buy his first album should that opportunity arrive.

And criticizing a pop star for outrageous clothing... Why, that's like criticizing a pop star for outrageous clothing. I bet you went batshit when you first saw Kurt Cobain in a dress, right? I mean, OMGZ, he's a dude, yo!

From what I understand, AI owns the contestants, and it doesn't let any of them talk about their private lives. They can say they're married or engaged or dating, but they can't talk about it much.

But they never hid Adam's boyfriend, and indeed, kept him on camera. When the photos of them kissing hit, Adam said that yes, it was him, and no, he wasn't ashamed, and yes, he will always "be himself."

Kara, when the show ended, was asked about Adam's orientation and she said that he was gay and that he--and they-- had never pretended otherwise.

Adam has never been "closeted," and this article is not a "coming out" article. It's just the first time he can talk about it with no restrictions. I really like your use of the term "job interview," Drew. He wasn't closeted or selling out his principles. He is an artistic, expressive, theatrical gay man trying to (slightly) reign all that in so that he could get as many votes as he could. That's not hiding who you are from shame (Clay); it's just being smart.

Hell, Kris did it too, in regards of his beliefs.

If it's alive, that is NOT a snake you'd want near your crotch. It's a green tree python, and, while non-venomous, they have HUGE FUCKING FANGS for catching the birds they eat.

And they tend to be very bitey.

I could be mistaken. It might be an emerald tree boa, not a green tree python. They look similar. But they're just as fangy and bitey.

Also, some dudes gay, well, good for him I guess. Gay or straight, fangs in balls is no fun.

@15: it's definitely a real snake though it might've been photoshopped into position. One hopes so.
