Also! For Your Stomach's (and Your Liver's) Consideration: Captain Black's

Posted by Bethany Jean Clement on Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Captain Black's—a new bar on Capitol Hill that serves chicken and waffles—is opening tonight. It's right next door to the Stumbling Monk on Belmont, where that vegan vegetarian place the Healthy Hedon (worst name ever) failed to thrive. Sources who attended the soft opening last night say the Captain's chicken and waffles = gooooooood.

Also: They have a two decks.

In closing: YAY.

So, am I the asshole for wondering if Healthy Hedon maybe isn't the worst name that location has suffered, as of tonight?

i'm very annoyed that they're not planning on weekend brunch service... why build that deck then?! just so hipsters can sit outside in the dark?

@2: Decks are generally for summer use, when it routinely stays light out past 8 PM.

I hope the chicken and waffles are better than Kingfish's. If so, it'll be worth the walk.

at the risk of sounding stupid, the chicken and waffles go together? I guess I just don't understand some things...like, loaning these guys the money to do this. It just seems like a gamble. Then again, I'm asking if chicken and waffles go together. Maybe I'm not the target audience.

@ #5 - I'm with you, kulshan. Chicken and waffles? Where does that come from? And why? My mind's tongue reels. (Huh? Well, you know what I mean.)

oh you kids! there used to be chicken and waffle houses all over california in the '40s! ain't you ever seen "Mildred Pierce"? she opened her own chicken and waffle house despite the fact her monster daughter despised her.

Ever since I visited Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles in LA I have been waiting and hoping for something that can even begin to approach the experience locally. Here's hoping... but I don't got 'em up to high.

czech it out if you get a chance

You wouldn't think so, but fried chicken on a waffle with gravy OR syrup is to die for. The waffle isn't particularly sweet or flavored in any way, it's just a big palette to set chicken on and then dump gravy all over. I never thought I would like it, but it's magnificent.

roscoe's in hollywood was in the 70s and still is the place after clubbing - the restaurant in pasadena usually has a 30-minute wait for sunday lunch.

chicken and waffles do go together, y'all - but it's a rich meal - not for everyday

oh and it's usually served with butter and syrup, etc - the fried chicken is used like sausage or bacon with sides of greens and/or potatoes with onion gravy if wanted

Chicken and waffles is primarily an African American combination which makes me believe that naming a place 'Captian Black's' a bit racist.

Also #2 the only people who talk about hipsters the way you do are, guess what, hipsters. So get over it, it's capitol hill.

@3: During the summer, there is sunlight from, let's say, 6am to 9pm. That's 15 hours of sunlight. Capt. Black's opens everyday at 5pm (even weekends), using only 4 out of those 15 hours. That's a little more than 25% of the amount of sunlight on a summer day.

If they were to open at 9am to serve brunch on the weekends, like other restaurants, they would use 80% of the sunlight!!!

So you are obviously stupid and a hipster to disagree.

@12: You are obviously stupid, too. A hipster would never want to sit in the sun during the day because they are pale and burn. I am in no way a hipster.

A) Healthy Hedon had cheese, so it was vegetarian.

B) I thought the name was clever, and I LOVED the place. I was heartbroken when it closed down.

Any new place owned by the lame ass owners of the War Room is a dump! This is the dawning of the age of the ruination of the Denny/Olive neighborhood. A responsible owner might add to the neighborhood but..... puhlease!

Went last night. Both decks are great places to sit to enjoy the sunshine, and there's a fair bit of seating indoors for you whiners. While I didn't have any chicken n' waffles, two of my tablemates did and were unequivocal fans. They've also got a full bar and decent prices on both wells and draft beers.

This place seems like another addition to the 'get the hipsters fat' conspiracy. I mean, think about it: Molly Moon, OF Custard, Rancho Bravo, Pike Street Fish Fry, and now chicken and waffles? There is no amount of coke to tame those calories. Skinny jeans are gonna be out of fashion soon enough….

I still miss Healthy Hedon. I'm not vegan or much of a vegetarian, but that food was to die for. I even tried emailing the owners after they closed to see if they'd cater ... but they all left town. Sad. :(

@17 Which would be fine with me, because skinny jeans don't look good on anyone. But I thought the whole thing with hipsters is that they hardly ever eat because they're so coked up all the time? If you're only taking in calories a couple times a week, you might as well make it count when you do, hence chicken and waffles.

The place has kinda a lousy beer selection (they have Manny's for $4 tho) unless you are down with cans of low-end beer like Tecate and Rainier. the food is deep fried and unhealthy-sysco-based stuff, but tastes great of course. the mixed drinks are a buck more or so than they should be. All in all, I give it a C+ or C just cause of the hangoutness spot of it all. I am annoyed that everything that is opening nowadays here is turning formerly cheaper, poor people's food into $20 "experiences" though. if somehow we could get the variety and tastiness of the Monk fused with the deck now--then we'd all be talking about it like it was a real place, instead of a fry and cheaply made expensive beer place.

"Healthy Hedon" has easily been trumped by "Nine Million in Unmarked Bills".
