Currently Hanging

Posted by Jen Graves on Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 2:25 PM

You wanted a little more of Dawn Cerny's flags and banners from the Gallery4Culture show celebrating the centennial of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition?

This one is We Get High (not very), with the word "Rainier" in the beer font. The mountain is hand-stitched and you can't really tell from this photograph, but the fabric is beautiful and slightly silky. It should hang at the city's door.

And here's an homage to the Frye Guy, who stands outside Nordstrom and yells about the Frye Apartments, the Seattle police, and communism.

If we had another exposition, these would be the subjects of some of our awe-inspiring exhibits today.

The typeface used in the logo on the first one is just ugly old Brush Script.

Here's a couple examples of the actual Rainier logo, that have seen some changes throughout the years:

I would like to see the Frye Guy flag presented to the Frye Guy as a cape. It would go beautifully with his bejeweled scepter.

I'm with paulus@1. I'm really hoping she did not intend to emulate the Rainier beer logo, because she ain't even close!

The Rainier flag reminds me of a high school sport's team logo with the brushscript font. I don't know, well... anything about the flag or the exhibit, but I'm not convinced that this flag is supposed to be in reference to Rainier beer. I think it's supposed to be logo for the mountain itself.

I'm not saying it's bad. It has the feeling of finding a close approximation to something without going through the process of actually recreating the custom logo. Which seems kind of apt in this case of old-timey flags constructed by people who aren't necessarily typographers.

I'm guessing 95% of people would see that and say, "yup, that's the Rainier logo".

@3 I'm with you. That would be an amazing cape.

I'm disgusted. I hope that the Frye Guy is getting compensation for the use of his artistic expression.

Yup, the Rainier font is approximate and intended. (At least that's what the curator told me.) Sorry I made it sound like a precise copy.

Actually, though, the almost-ism paulus is pointing out is kind of interesting in the context of the show. The cheapness of the copy is sort of like the way stories that get repeated get degraded. Another one of the works in the show addresses this directly: there are two A-Y-P flags the artist made to look like the original A-Y-P flags. She made the first one from looking at an old black-and-white picture, and she got the colors wrong. So she made a second, "corrected," one, complete with strikeouts for the mistakes. History misrecalled.

"Frye guy?" Huh. I always just called him the son of god. Hilariously, when I worked at Value Village on the hill, he would be the first motherfucker in the store, every Sunday.

You know the "frye guy" has a name, and yes this is the most awesome thing ever, and someone needs to give it to him, with a crown.
