NYT:

Republicans seized control of the New York State Senate on Monday, in a stunning and sudden reversal of fortunes for the Democratic Party, which controlled the chamber for barely five months. A raucous leadership fight erupted on the floor of the Senate around 3 p.m., with two Democrats, Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens, joining the 30 Senate Republicans in a motion that would displace Democrats as the party in control.

And it may be all our fault:

One source of contention among Democrats recently has been Mr. Smith’s support for same-sex marriage. Senator Rubén Díaz Sr., a Democrat from the Bronx, has been outspoken in his insistence that legislation allowing gay couples to marry not be allowed to come to a vote. Some had speculated he might leave the Democratic Party if Mr. Smith were to allow a vote.

But Mr. Díaz did not join Mr. Espada and Mr. Monserrate in the leadership vote on Monday. It was not immediately clear whether the same-sex marriage legislation played any role in the leadership dispute.

Clearly we need to elect more and better Democrats in New York. Who's going to run against these two douchebags? Where do I send a check?

You haven't even published a list of our Washington state legislators who are for gay marriage or against...which ones to persuade, which ones to target?

"more and better Democrats"

Still laboring under the illusion that the Democrats care about you, eh, Dan? Is the Obama Presidency not enough evidence for you yet?

You still have some old pappists who don't think the rape of countless children is any reason not to take orders from the pope. They're dying out, thank Jupiter.

We need a public figure NOW, someone with a face, a personality and a voice! Someone openly gay, who will not back down, not mince words and isn't afraid to take this country out of its comfort zone! When we're afraid to lose as a majority leader someone like Smith, who is a piece of shit coward anyway, not because he's an advocate but because he's someone who doesn't get in the way, THAT'S A PROBLEM!

It's a cliche, but we need a hero right now.

Way to mess up NY guys.

Now don't expect me to listen when they send you to concentration camps.

Which, if they could, they would.

Espada is in fact a co-sponsor of the marriage equality bill, although Monserrate was likely a no. The biggest anti-equality Democrat, Ruben Diaz Sr., didn't join them in this coup.

This isn't about marriage.

@7: So Smith, the guy who SUPPORTS gay marriage, is the problem? And the solution is a "hero"? You mean like the Ambiguously Gay Duo? Ok, right.

Dan, blaming politicians is easy and feels good, but it will only get you so far. Ultimately, you're going to have to confront the slim majority of voters who do not support gay marriage.

The makeup of the NY State Senate has 0 to do with the national GOP or gay marriage as a political issue even within NY State. NYS politics are pretty much always an unmitigated disaster so this type of thing happens on a pretty regular basis.

C'mon Mr Savage, Keeping your 'Fierce advocacy(REPUBLICAN) watch' is where is at. This is what happens when you keep the insistence on driving through a gay marriage agenda, the republicans take over. You and your New York cohorts succeeded in the New York senate, now youre going for the nation's Senate. And maybe while you're at it you can make sure that the President isn't re-elected for a second term, hm. Just come out as the republican operative you already are Mr Savage.

Dan may not mean to be but he is as useful to the Right as Rush is to the Left.
An egotistical bombastic out-of-touch self-righteous douchebag who fires up the opposition (and dismays his 'allies' except the credulous ass-kissing ditto-heads that worship him)
