Reading Tonight

Two readings tonight.

At Elliott Bay Book Company, Janet Brown, who worked in a bookstore with me a few years back, reads at Elliott Bay Book Company from her collection of travel essays, Tone Deaf in Bangkok, and Other Places. It's all about being a long-term resident of Thailand, and falling in love with Thailand, but never really fitting in there. My last intern read Janet's book and liked it a lot. Sadly, she never wrote a review for the book. And so I can tell you that it is good, but you should be aware of the serious conflict of interest there.

And China Miéville reads up at Third Place Books tonight, too. There is an interview with Miéville over here, and his new book, The City & the City, is by far my favorite of his. If you're a sci-fi fan, a fan of Eastern European fiction, or a lover of espionage, this is the reading for you. It is also—sorry, Janet!—the reading of the night.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

To echo my previous comments in the other thread, I'm very excited about Miéville's new book. His self-styled "genre" isn't for everyone (it's astoundingly creative and very weird), but I wish I could attend the reading.

I have a question — how does "The City & the City" stack up to "The Yiddish Policeman's Union"? I read the latter on Constant's advice and loved it.

Steve P - I answered one of your comments on another thread and here I am again!

As soon as I read "Yiddish Policemen's Union", I'll let you know. I just finished C&TC last night and it was fabulous. Similarly minded friends loved Chabon, so go for it! At least that one is out in paperback...

@2 — thanks for both responses, by the way. I actually discovered that my local library has a copy of "The City & the City" coming in very soon, so I'm all set.
