Sorry?

Posted by Lindy West on Thu, Jun 4, 2009 at 3:56 PM

Commenter "berian" has a quibble with my "review" of The Hangover:

Why are you "reviewing" something that is obviously not targeted at you? Doesn't THE STRANGER have any dudes who get dude humor? I haven't seen the film yet, but it is OBVIOUSLY meant to be enjoyed by 20/30 something men who are stuck in the limbo of life that happens when we are pretty much forced into the world that is douche-baggery. For more on that, see inside any frat house / military unit / mans sock drawer.

If I am qualified for anything in this life, I am qualified to like The Hangover. But I did not. Because it is bad. Sorry, bro!

He does have a point.

Most military unit humor is pretty lowbrow.

That said, doesn't mean the movie didn't suck big time, but they'll make a mint and will show up on spike TV and TNT for the next 20 years ...

While I'd probably never pay to see that movie, I bet I'd watch it on hulu or something if I were actually bedridden with a hangover and had some time to kill. The previews make it look like it's a zany adventurous comedy, but I have a sneaking suspicion that all the funny parts were in the trailer. Am I right?

I am an unmarried male in my 30's, a fan of a few of The Hangover's cast members, and named Doug-I couldn't imagine fitting this film's demographic more precisely; yet, this movie looks kinda like a piece of shit. I'd withhold judgment until after I've seen it, but comedies like these only come in two groups: films who blew all the good material in the trailor, and films with no good material.

Why anyone would ever make a movie-watching decision based on Lindy's reviews is a mystery to me, so the whole point is sort of moot.

Lindy--Do you like the movie Old School? Do you enjoy Zach Galifianakis' comedy? If you don't then I guess I can understand your piece a little better. I completely disagree with you and thought the movie was hilarious. I can see some people thinking it's just 'meh' but I am suprised to hear someone say it's bad. Especially you. I like your writing and generally agree with your reviews but you really made this movie sound like a POS which it was not. I was mostly just surprised by the vitriol in your review. I don't feel like this was a movie that deserved to incur your wrath. I feel like I don't know you anymore Lindy. I thought we had a thing where you write some funny and I read said funny and we laugh and laugh. But now I feel like that may be slipping away. Did you like Drag Me To Hell? Say you loved it like I did. Please. Give me some hope here or we may just have to go our separate ways.

The premise and cast look great, but I'm totally taking Lindy's word on this turd (rhyming!).

Zack Galifianakis is a smug prick, and that dude who emailed you is a total MRA. I blame the patriarchy.

@8: My point is that the movie's funny parts--which do exist--rely on the inherent funniness of the cast instead of on the writing, and that it could have been a THOUSAND times better with a decent script. That's all. I just think those screenwriters are bad at their job.

Although I do completely recommend seeing this movie I will grant you that the script was the weakest part and the two screenwriters have more than earned the world's ire with their previous output. You're back in my wolfpack.

I have to question why "berian" was critiquing a review that was so obviously not targeted to his demographic.
