When I heard that Betsy Baker, the legendary editor of Art in America since 1974, was stepping down a few months ago, I was nervous for the magazine. It wasn't as if Baker was leaving in a huff; she'd been there forever, and she intended to stay on as a contributor. But I guess I get nervous whenever anything happens to a print publication these days.
Then Art in America got—WHAT?—markedly better. It's looser, with more of a variety of pieces of writing in it; it's warmer; and it actually has a complete and almost rockingly good web site—not only an archive of stories from the monthly magazine (which previously were not even available online at all) but also with constantly renewed web features, too. There's also a great gallery where you can browse magazine covers all the way back to 1980.
Thank you for not going the way everything seems to go, AiA. I love you right now.
