Who Got Next?

Posted by on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 4:52 PM

The fascinating thing about this post in the The Moment, an NYT blog, are the comments. The post essentially locates Caffé Vita as the next big thing in Seattle's coffee scene. Several of the comments, however, challenge this assessment with the viciousness of a player hater. What it all comes down to is Stumptown versus Caffé Vita. Meaning, it's down to Portland versus Seattle.

Stumptown is pretty damn good, but it's not necessarily better than anything we have in Seattle. As some of the commenters note, Cafe Vita is about the most mediocre of our local farm-direct coffees: drinkable, but doesn't hold a candle to Vivace, Victrola, or Lighthouse. So Portland's heavyweight against Seattle's overrated midweight isn't a fair match.

Um, this is like 5-10 years behind.

Like most NY Times views of Seattle.

Bet they don't know the bus/lightrail tunnel is open until 1 am either.

Stumptown coffee is so fucking good.

Vivace makes the best espresso.

Vita is very... nice.

"Seattle Coffee Scene"? How sad is that?

That said, I'm not unhappy when I drink the coffee at Zeitgeist in Pioneer Square.

Best place for coffee: My Kitchen.

I make only Medaglia D'Oro espresso.

And unlike any "northwest coffee house" I add a twist of lemon and a spoonful of cane sugar.

Like in Italy.

But then again, the Northwest is one of those places where they use cottage cheese in the lasagna instead of ricotta.

@7, very nice. The Northwest's penchant for calling 20-ounce cups, nineteen of which are warm milk, "coffee" has always amused me.

The article inherently misses the point. What makes The Next Big Thing the next big thing is that it takes the culture by surprise. Pointing it out eliminates that element and as a result, any venue this article discusses probably isn't The Next Big Thing.

Media paradoxes net extra readership, I suppose.
